The Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street intersection improvements project is scheduled to take place next year.

https://getinvolved.london.ca/sunningdalerichmond

This project includes:
  • the widening of Sunningdale Rd from 2 to 4 lanes through Richmond between Villagewalk Boulevard to Redford Road
  • the reconstruction of Richmond St from Villagewalk Boulevard to Uplands Drive
  • new in-boulevard asphalt bike paths and concrete sidewalks
  • new underground infrastructure, including storm sewers.
  • new median islands, curb, and gutter
  • new street lighting and traffic signals

A virtual meeting is scheduled on January 15, 2024 on Zoom, which will include visualizations of the road improvements

kinda funny eh, all that work in the NW of the city, to support the new builds and new to London-ers, who are then to complain about the work.

Here's hoping they stay on track to do the Wonderland to Richmond widening to 5 lanes and bridge replacement in 2025 followed by the Richmond to Adelaide widening to 5 lanes in 2026. One would hope they also have the EA and planning done for the Adelaide to Highbury widening and Hyde Park to Wonderland widening in 2027 and 2028 years.

An unfortunate update on the Sunningdale / Richmond intersection project from the area councillor's monthly newsletter (Rahman):

Quote:
We are still awaiting permits from Imperial Oil for the intersection of Sunningdale Rd. and Richmond St., this delay will mean we can’t start this project in 2024.
However, on the positive side, this delay means that we won't have two major adjacent intersections being reconstructed at the same time since Fanshawe and Richmond is currently under construction and it is set to finish by the end of the year.

Not surprised to hear this was delayed yet again. It's been a case study on how not to do planning on the part of the City.

Would be nice if London would start using roundabouts for these intersections. It makes a lot of sense in places like Waterloo/Kitchener, why not London? So many intersections can be improved, as well as traffic flow, with roundabouts.

Sunningdale is to be closed overnight from the 26th to the 27th for asphalt repairs between Richmond and Adelaide.

https://london.ca/newsroom/public-servic...ement-overnight-road-closure-sunningdale

Even though the whole road will have to be torn up again for widening likely within the next few years, I am glad to see these repairs done this week. There are some portions of the road (specifically between Richmond and Skyline) that are in absolute awful awful condition.

Here is a new staff report on the progress of the detailed design for the Sunningdale widening from Wonderland to Adelaide: https://pub-london.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=111377

Timing for the construction phases:
  • Phase 1- Sunningdale and Richmond Street Intersection - 2025
  • Phase 2A – Sunningdale from Wonderland Road to Medway Creek Bridge - 2026
  • Phase 2B – Medway Creek Bridge replacement - 2025 or 2026
  • Phase 3 – Sunningdale from Medway Creek Bridge to west of Richmond Street - 2025 or 2026
  • Phase 4 – Sunningdale from east of Richmond Street to Blackwater Road - 2027
  • The timing of the Sunningdale Road improvements from Blackwater to Adelaide Street will be coordinated with consideration of the Adelaide Street corridor in the Mobility Master Plan and Development Charges Bylaw processes

Great to see some movement on this file... the city posted today that hydro pole relocation work will start next Monday (and will occur until the end of February), which is necessary for the Sunningdale/Richmond project to happen next spring.

The city will be urbanizing a small section of Sunningdale Road next year, which includes new sewers, curbs, sidewalks, turn lanes, and cycling paths. The work will essentially start just east of the new roundabout construction at Hyde Park Rd. and carry over east to Jordan Boulevard, which is a new neighbourhood street. This work is required for the new subdivisions immediately adjacent to this, specifically the sewer work.

I have to say I am impressed that the city will finally be urbanizing a stretch of road before the subdivision goes in.... usually we see a road torn up for a new subdivision for utilities, and then put back together as a rural road, then torn up again years later for curbs, sidewalks, etc.

https://pub-london.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=113823

Quote:
Since completion of the roundabout project, adjacent residential development has occurred and improvements to Sunningdale Road West from Hyde Park Road to Jordan Boulevard are required in 2026 to support this development. Improvements will include an updated two-lane urban cross section with a new storm sewer, sidewalks and cycling lanes.

This coordination will result in cost efficiencies for the city and minimizes throw-away costs and construction disruption in the future.

Sadly they will likely build it at 2 lanes wide and install storm drains and sewers and bike paths and sidewalks at that width rather then 4 lanes which it will need to be in a few short years. Why plan ahead and have vision when you can dig it up again and re-tender for reconstruction a few years later? Got to keep the tax dollars flowing to the engineering firms and construction companies.

I'd be truly surprised if they do this work at the 4 lane width standard but history teaches us they won't.

Looks like L82 Construction to be awarded the contract for the rebuild of the Richmond/Sunningdale intersection starting this spring. ~$7.5M

Construction will start on the Sunningdale and Richmond widening next Monday.

It is great to finally see work begin as the Sunningdale study was completed in 2012!

Well two days in to the rebuild and all they have done is line up orange pylons on the road side for the Richmond/Sunningdale intersection. No heavy equipment on site, no digging.

Went through early this afternoon and it looked like a crew was working on getting ready for temporary traffic signals on one corner. A lone worker in a bobcat was clearing brush on the southwest corner. Guess it's all stuff that has to happen, so I guess they are officially doing something lol.

Excavator now working the south side of Sunningdale west of Richmond stripping topsoil back. They might want to bring in a few more pieces of equipment other then one lonely excavator if they hope to finish this by the end of November sign they have up.
