I am afraid the bottleneck will still be there with the busy Oxford intersection. This is just a patch up to the whole London traffic flow situation.

Wharncliffe and Western will be 4 lanes. No doubt, the left turn lanes will spill back in to the left thru lane as they commonly do at busy times, but the 2 lane bottleneck currently there will be gone next year.

When this is done there will be some relief from the bottleneck as it will be 4 lanes. True that the left and right turning lanes will still cause jams during rush hours at the Oxford St intersection.

You definitely will see a big increase on Wharncliffe traffic volumes as folks start using it as an alternative north-south route. I would expect Sarnia Rd volumes to increase as well especially when the Wonderland Rd widening to 6 lanes starts in the future. If Richmond gets torn up for the BRT and lane reductions this will become a major north-south route.

With all the residential development going on in the River Bend, Warbler Woods, Kilworth, Sunningdale, Hyde Park and Fox Hollow neighborhoods the city needs to make visionary planning a priority ASAP.

Short sighted bonehead projects like only 3 lanes for the Sarnia Rd rebuild east of Hyde Park has to stop.

We need another major north-south route in the west end. Another major east-west route in the north end.

Maybe its time to look at Gainsborough bridge over Medway Creek to connect to Windemere and rebuild to 5 lanes?

I agree, and also suggested connecting to Killaly in the east, and tying in VMP to Killaly and Clarke as originally planned. Major east/west corridor that way.

Some pics from the city's Facebook page. It's gone

This crossing has been a research study for Western engineering students for decades. What will they look at now?

A lot of tree removal now underway north of the bridge along Western Rd to make way for the widening and utility moves.

So the city is buying the little plaza to the north on the west side at the corner of Essex St. Apparently, the city only needs a little slice of the land for the road widening, but the owner felt this would be harmful to his business and wanted the city to buy the whole thing. Of course, I'm a cynic so I immediately think the guy was smart to part with a property that has 2 businesses in it (a variety store and a pizza place) that are likely slower in the summer without students around anyway, and will get killed with the road being all torn up for the several months it will take for the construction. He gets to walk away and not worry about it now.

Of course, maybe it works out well for the city, and those businesses survive through the construction and with a new 4 lane, busier road with more visibility, maybe the plaza is worth more after it's all done.

I think they both walk away somewhat happy more for the owner of the plaza who probably bought it at a steal. I feel it was a little much for that plaza but land value has been shooting up and the city needs the property without a big hassle so I am not surprised at the price.

Good progress on the new concrete bridge abutments. The east one is poured and the west one appears to be formed. It covered so can't tell if they have done the concrete pour yet.

April is usually the start of major road work. The heavy equipment will hopefully be brought in to start digging up Western road and widening the current shoulders. Alot of earth to be moved.

Then again they may wait until May 1st to allow Western to finish winter term.

From the Free Press. It didn't say when train traffic will move back over to this new bridge.

Wharncliffe north of Oxford will be closed Saturday April 28 for the day, presumably to remove the temporary rail bridge. The road widening is well underway to the north

Great photo.

Will be an excellent addition to our historical archive of images.

Gonna be so well worth the trouble. Now if only that old bag could just cooperate with the rest of the city and let things move forward
