Notch 8
http://www.notch8-dining.com/

Our second and final Dine Out Vancouver visit this year was to the beautiful and upscale Notch 8 restaurant inside the historical Hotel Vancouver. We did enjoy the dinner, although it wasn't the best ever Dine Out menu we have had. The setting inside the landmark building lobby is still very nice.

Savory Macaron with Caviar, Smoked Salmon, Scallop Mousse, Roe, Crème fraîche, Flowers, Micro Dill

Braised Wagyu Shortrib with Truffle, Marrow-Pumpkin Puree, Chanterelles, Red Winter Wheat Berries, Huckleberry-Black Garlic-Aged Balsamic, Cipollini

Brie Walnut Ice Cream with Black Currant Gelee, Nut Wafer, Fingerlime

Mon Paris Patisserie
http://www.monparis.ca/

Not a restaurant per se, but a new French-influenced patisserie has open next door to us here in Metrotown and their chocolate creations are like works of art. I hope they will do great.

They moved from their location further up Granville by the Orpheum. Too bad, really as their blade sign will go now, and isn't replaced on their new location. Their new location replaces Cafe Artigiano.

Gotham Steakhouse
http://gothamsteakhouse.com/

Saturday night we felt like eating a good steak, so we went to try out the legendary Gotham Steakhouse. While expensive, their Prime-graded steaks were fantastic and the art deco interiors of this 1933-built building make for a very nice dinner environment. The Dining Room is just so dimly-lit that taking hand-held photos was almost impossible.

Steaks are all Prime-graded (only 2% of beef in Canada is graded Prime) and it shows in the prices. Also sizes are larger than in your standard Keg.

I didn't get a good photo of the 10oz Filet but it was superb. One of the best I have had in a long while.

Also double-cut lamb chops were fantastic.

All in all, we liked the place a lot and it is now our go-to fine dining steakhouse. It definitely exceeded Hy's Encore nearby, which also has a nice deco, but the food has been unremarkable on both times we have been there.

Wild Tale
https://wildtale.ca/

Dine Out Vancouver is again ongoing and on the first night we went to try the new $45 menu at Wild Tale. Their new sister location in Olympic Village was recently opened and is a nice addition to the area's restaurant offering.

Dungeness Crab & Baby Shrimp Cake, pickled fennel salad, lemon and dill aioli.

Venison Carpaccio, watercress, parmesan and horseradish.

Surf and Turf, 'AAA' California cut beef striploin lobster mashed potato, charred broccolini + cabernet jus.

Lemon and rum cheesecake, cherry compote.

It was slightly disappointing that as a seafood restaurant there were not that many seafood options on the menu, but we still enjoyed our visit. Not sure if the new $45 option is necessary worth it, but I guess it depends on the restaurant.

Great pics, thanks. The $45 option is just a price bump from the $40 option of years past. The Keg is $45 this year as well.

I like Wild Tale, both locations are nice.

Popeyes announces second Metro Vancouver location, this one with a drive-thru

By Lindsay William-Ross - January 28, 2019

Fried chicken fast food fans rejoiced in December when the U.S.-based chain Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen opened their first Metro Vancouver location, in Port Coquitlam. But if you happen to have your “Bonafide” chicken and Cajun fries craving and you’re south of the Fraser, take heart: Popeyes is opening a location in Surrey.

Located at 14380 64 Ave in the Sullivan Heights area, a rep for Popeyes reached out to Vancouver Is Awesome to share that the franchise is aiming to open up at the end of March.

The Surrey location will have 50 seats for dining in, as well as the chain’s first drive-thru in B.C.

This is the second Metro Vancouver Popeyes to open as part of their current expansion and their third overall; the Kamloops Popeyes opened immediately after the Port Coquitlam one. A fourth, in Pentiction, is slated to open after the Surrey outpost.

The regular menu has lots of seafood although what's on offer sounds in no way unique or special.

Massive fan of Pret!!! Been waiting 25 years for them to enter Canada, let's hope they do some free-standing locations soon as I don't see it as a match for A&W. Pret's quality is outstanding in the UK, consumer is far more of a fresh and healthy one than those of A&W.

Cleaning out my phone and found these from Palate Kitchen in the Jamieson building. Big space and that standard CRU with mezzanine look. Am I the only one who finds it slightly confusing that Pallet Coffee Roasters operates Palate Kitchen? I get what they're trying to do but not the greatest if you're looking it up.

Published on Main
https://publishedonmain.com/

It's a while since we have been able to try out any new restaurants, but the opportunity presented itself last month to go check out one of the new Michelin Star restaurants. Surprisingly many of them are located in Downtown Eastside, so we chose Published on Main based on its location in the Little Mountain neighborhood and also the food which has been renown even before they got their star.

The interior is a contemporary version of a traditional English tea house.

Their Michelin Star plaque is proudly on display.

Their 10-course tasting menu starts at $165 per person, but we ended spending $470 in total for two. The unusual thing was that the entire bill was due already upon booking and not just a small deposit, as is more traditional.

Chef's selection of snacks was a great start to the experience and we enjoyed them greatly.

Markklössensuppe beef shank, bone marrow, dumplings

Side stripe shrimp, cucumber, horseradish oil is their famous dish.

Hiramasa seabuckthorn

Sablefish, yuzu, pines

Ravioli with delicata squash, koji butter sauce was an excellent main course and also other main courses did not disappoint.

Bison, brown butter, celeriac

Brunost tart was an interesting experience.

Grape basil gelato was refreshing.

Douglas fir malt crumb

The entire experience took as almost 3 hours and as we were leaving, the restaurant was full of people and rather loud, which does take away from the atmosphere.

Overall, it was a pleasant and worthy experience and does match our previous experience of several 1 Michelin Star restaurants in several countries. For them to exceed that and get a second star, the food needs some work to be more inventive and to get the ultimate 3 stars, the service, which wasn't bad, needs to be a lot more personalized. In current state, the experience is worthy of 1 Michelin Star in our humble opinion.

Cool. Surprising to see brunost on a menu here, although there is Norwegian crepe place on Robson that serves it.

Surrey is getting another Chipotle, in the Strawberry Hill shopping centre. The Jollibee is now open there, we drove passed it on friday night around 9:30 pm and it was packed full.

Hart House
https://www.harthouserestaurant.com/

Hart House is a fine dining establishment in Burnaby and close to us, yet this past Mother's Day was our first visit to it. The impressive main building was originally built in 1906, as a residence for a wealthy businessman and was eventually converted into a restaurant in 1988.

Architecturally the building represent the Tudor Revival style.

The building holds a heritage status from the City of Burnaby.

Inside, the former residence has been converted to a restaurant with good taste, retaining lot of the old characteristics.

The Mother's Day buffet table wasn't the largest in town, but it was still fantastic! Here is just a small sample of what was being offered.

The restaurant is located in a very green part of the city, right next to Deer Lake and offers some fantastic views across the water.

Needless to say that we will be back at for another visit to try out their regular menu, too!
