When I right click I also have a "Map with Livesearch" option that takes you to a Bing map.

Pic by coworker today. I walked by the site and it looks to be excavated to about a metre below grade so far.

Interestingly I noticed today that 177 Robson st (must be the same project) has a meeting at the DPB on Mach 5, 2012. Somewhat strange to see a project head to the DPB after they've started digging.

Could be a typo for 1277 Robson.

^ I'm still confused by this - the City's list of upcoming major development applications refers to 1177 Robson Street (even though the DPB info page still refers to 177 Robson) - 1177 Robson Street is the north-east corner of Robson and Bute or thereabouts (Google map: http://g.co/maps/hsu5e).

The application is for a "new 20-storey hotel and residential building with commercial on the ground floor and hotel rooms on the second to fourth floors" by Relative Form, which appears to be a West Van architecture firm.

Anyone know anything about this one?

That is strange - I wouldn't expect any new highrises would be allowed on Robson itself. I could see them taking down a Pacific Palisades tower and building a new one in its place at 1277 Robson (even if not on Robson itself). But 1177 Robson is a large enough site (London Drugs and earls) to allow for a tower.

EDIT: It probably is the Hilton site at 177 Robson, although hotel units on 2nd to 4th floors? 2nd to 14th maybe?

Relative Form is the architect for the Hilton Hotel project:

^ Ah, that most likely explains it, even if it seems like a late application.
BTW, is there a formal City policy limiting heights/stories on the north side of Robson on the core shopping blocks?

odd also that if it was 1177 it would not have 2 story retail....

Yeah, as far as I recall, there is a height limit on Robson Street. The only ones taller than 2 storeys are older buildings.

Maybe the application is to reduce the hotel component to just 3 floors (2nd-4th??)

Looks like you're correct - the City's list of upcoming development applications has been updated to refer to 177 Robson. It still specifies hotel on the second to fourth floors though...

So it appears the site does have a development permit in hand issued on the old plans but is looking to apply for a new permit to change things to allow for less hotel and more hotel, it appears height will remain the same, density increases slightly, but it'll actually lose one floor as the floors will each be taller (a reverse of current trends). Anyways all the answers can be found here.
