It's almost surrreal to see pictures... I still own a home there, but as of this month, I have not been back in two years.

I don't know if I could ever live there again. I have mixed feelings.

Great job on one of your more 'gritless' threads!
Years ago I went to the sloss furnaces for a party. Do you have any shots from there or is it not open to the public when not leased for an event?

Sloss is still quite open. i haven't been since 2006; i went on a weekday. the site is very open; it was almost a quasi-urban exploring experience.

here's the ones i have on my site, which barely cover it

Very cool shots... some of those pictures actually remind me of San Antonio not Birmingham. I have always liked Birmingham with its hilly topograhpy and it has been a long time since we've seen it here without Randy. I like the aerial shots from the plane... it looks like there are 2 downtown areas.

You can't ever know without visiting in person, but Birmingham looks like it would be a comfortable place.

The downtown/CBD is at the bottom of the aerials that LSyd posted. The area at the top of the aerials is UAB/Southside.

LSyd, thanks for taking the time to share these! you've always represented the 'ham well.
If I remember correctly what I read at the time from a newspaper clipping on the forum, Randy was taking photos of an Amtrak train and was crossing the tracks behind it when it unexpectedly and suddenly backed up. I would suppose there was an investigation; railroad accidents involving injury, death or serious property damage almost always are investigated both by railroad officials and civil authorities.

It's something that never should have happened, had operating rules been followed; as I understand it, a train crew should never reverse direction without having someone either at the back of the last car or on the ground to protect the movement (make sure nothing and nobody are in the way).

I go down to Birmingham every now and then for my job and i'm always impressed by the built environment of the city and its well preserved urban core. It has a lot of character compared to other sunbelt cities. I hope it can take advantage of what it has and prosper in the future.
