Incredible! It looks like it had a good building boom.

Jularc, yes it definitely had a boom in the 70's and 80's, and smaller ones since then.

There is a Honolulu thread fever spreading through the site, so I am 'bumping' this thread into the mix!

well played geomorph, thanks for doing this. what a fantastic thread. i believe this is the first i've seen of the USS arizona memorial, not to mention the state capitol and several of the highrises. really thorough tour of honolulu's architecture.

this is BADASS:

That's probably my fault, I was feeling...cold...so I was looking at Honolulu (and other tropical) threads, new and old. But anyways, excellent thread, I think I must have missed it!

Its so cool, its like a Japanese/American city, but I guess that makes sense, since it has a gigantic Japanese population. Is there an historic core, like with blocks of the original buildings left, or have most been torn down and replaced with modern buildings?

^The majority have been destroyed. However, the majority that remain are located in Chinatown/The Art's District, a few west of River Street, the Capitol District, and tiny little pockets scattered around the city.

There's a Historic Honolulu thread in the Found City section that you can check out to see what there used to be and some of what remains if you are interested. The architecture of the city looked a lot like what you'd find in other US cities of it's time but unfortunately many were destroyed during Honolulu's massive building boom of the 70s-80s.

ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHY oh WHY oh WHY would they CHANGE that?!?!?!?!?!?! that is absolutely sickening, a waste of money, when they could apply it to an interior renovation or funding a new building altogether. terrible, terrible, terrible.

also, while i'm here, this just in: emporis is terrible too. sorry for the retard watermark message above. this is the building i was trying to post above:

(pic from portlandarchitecture.com)

to reiterate: does anyone know if there is a building in honolulu identical to this one? according to wikipedia and some other things i've read about it, this building -- the portland plaza -- is a clone of a building by the same developer and architect, but nothing i can find backs this up or even mentions the building in honolulu. just curious if anyone knows anything more.

Hands down the best city in the Pacific Ocean Really, the fact that there is city of 1 million literally in the middle of an ocean that covers half the planet alone is unbelievable, and the fact it looks like a mini tropical Manhattan makes it that much more unique. Definitely gonna move there in 50 years.

What really gets me is just how far it is between the mainland and the islands. That 5-hour flight from CA across nothing but water can be overwhelming. One might think Hawaii is a lonely place way out there in the middle of the Pacific, but when you get there, it's a busy, thriving state, and Honolulu itself is quite a city.

Here are two beach webcams (operated by the city of Honolulu) that I love to look at. I've had friends stand in front of the cams and wave to me as we speak via cell phone.

One of the cams doesn't seem to be working today, but it usually does. Both cams have some pretty good background music.
