yume-sama,
your idea that ontario hates the west is ridiculous. i grew up there and lived much of my life there as well. i have never heard people bashing the west, ever. i don't hear ppl bashing much of anything in bc either. however, alberta is bash/complain all the bloody time. it was highly annoying.

Whether we like it or not, french his part of the official language in this Country.
The french still represent 1/3 of the population of Canada.
There is no need to get into a hissy fit over this issue, the rules are to have the games in the most convenient language " bastardize English ".
Of course, unless you are a true descendant of English aristocracy from England, then you are no more an English than me French.
By the way for those who have yet to visit France, they vocabulary is atrocious, it has become so americanized it puts the Quebecois language to shame.
My mother tongue is Quebecois and I was raised in an English environment
Beaconfield, Quebec. lived here in BC for over 30 years, so who's truly Knowledgeable, some moron from Alberta bashing the Chinese of Vancouver, or a french full of himself stating Quebecois have no class speaking french, or some Hindu who still after 25 years here still doesn't speak neither official language.
Get with the program the Olympics are going to be in English whatever that is with some me cookie no speakie no understand person stating that one needs to take a cab to surrey before making it to the airport with the sound of Hindi music while you can eat some sushi, once at the airport or on commercial drive wherever the wind blows, stop for a wonderful espresso served by some Italian mama with open arms, and don't forget to purchase your HEMP bag and your organic juice from the perfect plastic bodies or Kitsalano babes just a walk away from Wreck beach homestead, lastly
have some Jamaican chicken that may or may not burn your tongue, in the hope you REALIZE that in VANCOUVER, the world is truly here the Best oyster, shut up and enjoy, welcome to Vancouver, Bienvenue a Vancouver,
Unless your American than you will find something to complain or worse fear.
recipe for life is 1 cup of SALT and 3 pounds of SUGAR make life much easier
Peace out
How I LOVE this City

I don't think French / English is a race.

Prejudice is probably the better word.

I think there is a prejudice on both sides

J'ai appris le français à la lecture de boîtes de céréales.

just a note: the 1/3rd number of French speaking includes billingual people... native French is about 22% of the population and French-only is 13% (which is actually pretty big!)....

I thought you wouldn't see much English in Richmond anyways
I would put at least a couple other languages in the lower mainland before French IMO.

French in Vancouver is about as useful as t!ts on a bull.

Its bad enough that our federal gov't discriminates against anglophones in their hiring practices, but the icing on the cake is our tax dollars going to "language police" who crisscross the country making sure French is offered to non-existent Francophones.

Yeah I'd put Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi, Hindi, Farsi, German, Hungarian, Tagalog, Spanish, Turkish, Japanese, Fijian, Somalian etc... instead french

Seriously though French is our second official language so in that sense the "main" should have some french in them. My idea would be to make them very tiny, lol.

Aren't the Quebecers hell bent about English being on their signs?

Oooh, yes, they're so serious about a Bilingual Canada that they refused to put a word of English on the new Quebec drivers license.

You know, an official government document of identification, of a bilingual Country, where French is the minority language.

I'm sure the National Park signs are at least in English, as all of ours are in English / French

That's a pretty stupid plan. I doubt police here need to know French (non-RCMP), so that license would essentially require you obtain an IDP (international driving permit) in order for it to be of any use outside the province.

Discussing of the presence or not of French at the Olympic Games weither they are held in Canada, China or Zimbabwe is useless:

"1. The official languages of the IOC are French and English.
2. At all Sessions, simultaneous interpretation must be provided into French, English, German, Spanish, Russian and Arabic.
3. In the case of divergence between the French and English texts of the Olympic Charter and any other IOC document, the French text shall prevail unless expressly provided otherwise in writing.

Olympic Charter (2007), Rule 24, p. 53.

Why so? The revival of the Ancient Greek Olympic Games was achieved by Baron Pierre de Coubertin.

Which is exactly why it's silly to complain they aren't French enough.

Sure. But it's just Bloc MPs stirring the pot like they always do. They're not about to end soon, as it seems to work quite well...

Dude the federal government doesn't discriminate against anglophones, they discriminate against unilingual people. Just because more anglophones happen to be unilingual doesn't make it discrimination, unless anglophones are inherently less able to learn French.

Honestly, in a place like Vancouver, especially Richmond, I'd bet we have more fluent Chinese-speakers than French-speakers XD And yeah this is just making a fuss over nothing, French is an official Olympic language =_="

Yeah.

I don't mind seeing a bit of French here and there, but we live in BC, which is officially unilingual towards English.

But I'll be honest, I have an issue seeing signage in Punjabi or Chinese. Learning the native language is the best way to survive within a culture. I know if i moved anywhere around the world, i'd do my best to instantly adapt and learn the language and conduct my business in the local/native language.
