The good news is that, during these economically uncertain times, a building so unambitious has a better chance of being completed than the Ritz-Carletons, etc.

re: the old coast, these guys really were ahead of the curve there on the rental conversion. it would be nice if someone would do the same with the chateau granville and a couple others - there will be so many $1500-2500 p/m rental units coming on the market in the coming months (with what effect, i wonder), it would be great to see some more of the less costly stock come online in the downtown peninsula.

I think it's pretty obvious that the work on the conversion won't begin until after this hotel is completed and operational, and that is scheduled for Late/09.
With the games right around the corner it wouldn't make any sense to start work before that so should give a better idea of when the conversion would begin.

Lol, not the best shots either; actually you can't tell in those photos but the dark green glass part has a multicolour/stained glass effect.

But yeah, pretty mediocre design.

Personally, I think this is going to be a good looking building. Nothing too fancy, but something that's a little different.

A couple shots from today:

This one is blurry, apparently I don't know how to auto-focus very well

A close-up detail of the glass in the middle column. Shadows weren't exactly my friend on this one:

Those panels should show up better when lit from the interior - otherwise they're always in shadow on the north side of the building.

Edit - yeah the pics are of the south side (Pender) - thought they were of the north side.

^awvan's pics look like they're from Pender. Did you mean to say you were walking along Hastings?

Thanks for the pics, awvan.

This one's shot up fast; only 2 more floors until it's topped out!

From today, March 22nd:

What a short building. That can't be viewcone limitations, it's right next to Coal Harbour.

The sad thing is it is almost double the height of the two buildings to its left and to its right (not seen in this photo). I do think it is a nice looking building, although i do wish it were 10 to 20 stories taller. So is this project considered infill of not? Its height kind of puts it in a grey area.

Actually, its nice to have the difference IMHO. We've built so much in the last couple years that all looks too similar.

They're still building the penthouse levels, but this one is basically topped out now:
