To clarify, I don't think a healthy neighbourhood's street life is in any way synonymous with the Granville Street bar district. A proper neighbourhood for me is essentially a streetcar suburb with a linear commercial high street adjacent to housing. Streetlife comes about from the organic movement of people between their homes and nearby businesses and shops, banks and pharmacies, restaurants and cafes.

Anyway, the beauty of a city is that there is variety and lots of people. I think Coal Harbour has successfully yielded some of the best features of the West End but it is missing a successful commercial high street, which is integral to the West End's amazing livability. For me Robson Street was never a part of Coal Habour and both Georgia Street, Pender Street, and a significant hill all act as psychological barriers.

there is also a webcam link if you go to www.pacificmetropolis.com. Has plenty of links to other projects aswell, I've found ti to be a convenient and easy to use resource.

Most of the second floor is being poured today, then can't do the whole floor due to the size of the floorplate and the configuration of the floor due to overheight lobbies. Either way seems like they are making great time as it was only last week that they finished the ground floor.

Raggedy, in my books you've officially won this month's shutterbug award.

i cant wait for this one...even though it has "shaw tower lines" and is simple in look, it is going to have such a huge impact on the skyline from the north water and really give some critical mass to that relatively quiet area.

I'm happy Fairmont is finally above ground. It felt like it took forever to reach grade (obviously cause of it's massive foundation).

How many more Fairmont hotels does downtown Vancouver need? I kinda figured that the Waterfront Center and the Hotel Vancouver were enough.

This hotel's timing is unfortunate though. At almost any other time in Vancouver's history a 44 story hotel would get a lot of attention since it is about the same height as the tallest office towers. Too bad it is getting largely ignored due to the Ritz-Carlton and Shangri-La going up at the same time.

Man, some of you guys are lazy. Towerguy3, this is the building's webcam: http://www.camcentral.net/directurl/westbank/fairmont/

I'm glad we'll finally be able to see this building rise and I'm interested in seeing the final product since at this point I'm not too sure how I feel about it from the models. From what I could see it just looks like a typical Vancouver condo on steroids though I am looking forward to the lighting feature either way. Perhaps once I see it in person I'll change my mind. Also I have no idea what the base will look like in person and if it is attractive at street level that will garner extra points from me.
