Had GM Place not been built in that spot between the two viaducts might it have been built a bit bigger? As it stands it looks like it's been crushed to fit in between the two viaducts.
GM Place's seating capacity is what it is on purpose. Arenas and stadiums around the globe have made the move to smaller numbers to maximize profits by increasing demand for tickets. The Montreal Canadiens have openly stated that if they had to do it over again, they would have built the Bell Centre with fewer seats.

As for the concourses, which by new building standards are dreadful, could be made a lot better. The arena lacks some of the amenities that other arena's boast because of financial issues that arose during construction.

Question Hockey?

Could BC Place have a hockey game?

It would be pretty awesome to have the Olympic finals (or maybe even the Stanley Cup finals ) there. Or we could do what Edmonton did and have a heritage classic game. '94 Canucks vs. Rangers would be cool.

Wouldn't be much of a game to watch - both for fans in BC Place and viewing on a TV. The viewing angles would be terrible.

The bid committee included that in their final presentation to the IOC in Prague, but that has since fallen apart. They proposed to have the finals for figure skating and hockey at BC Place.....but there are few complications to that:

- BC Place will be hosting nightly medal ceremonies which will include performances by artists, and a theatrical venue is required for these ceremonies
- the finals for men's hockey is historically on the morning of the Closing Ceremony....preparations need to be made for the Closing Ceremony throughout the day
- ice quality
- cavernous atmosphere, poor tv image
- 60,000 seats to fill: what if Canada doesn't make it to the finals? lots of empty seats to fill.....
- additional cost

Tickets for the Olympic Men's Hockey Final would be sold out long before we knew if Canada makes it. You can guarantee, BC Place would be full anyway.
