That is not true at all.
Both in the world, and among developing nations in particular, India has one of the most balanced and equal income distributions.
Indeed, the most accurate measure of this, the
Gini index, confirms this. Where 0 being perfect equality, and 1 being perfect inequality, India scores a 32.5, according to the CIA world factbook.
For comparison, America scores a 45, UK a 36.8, China a 44, Brazil a 56.7.
Indeed, in parallel with economic growth (reaching 9.4% this year), the gini index is actually
falling, i.e. India is becoming more equal as more and more poor are emancipated into the middle class.
That is why Indians love capitalism. It has given them the wealth that socialism has denied them since independence, and that economic authoritarianism under the British Raj took away.
As I said in the last thread, lets put this in perspective. This building is no more a work of hubris as any other rich guy buying a big ass ranch in the countryside. At least Ambani is creating a landmark building, one that pushes architectural boundaries, while at the same time driving economic development and infrastructure in Mumbai, and creating employment to 600 people.
And to put it in even more perspective, Ambani's construction company, Reliance Construction, is the one building this tower. It is a keystone project that shows the world what they can do architecturally. Note that Reliance Construction is currently one of two companies left in the final round of bidding Hyderabad's 100-storey tower + 30 other building CBD. They are also soon to break ground on a huge SEZ city across the bay from Mumbai that will eventually house millions of people, among tens of other capital projects across the Subcontinent. They are positioning themselves to become one of the largest construction companies on the planet.
This project is as much an investment into Reliance as it is to Mumbai as a whole. Only 4 floors of this tower is his residence. The rest of it is dedicated to wooing and impressing business clients, I'm certain, both with the architecture and the construction capability of his company.
PS: Why are there 2 threads on this project? It's kind of odd to have concurrent discussions on the same subject. Construction is well underway, so it isn't a proposed project, so the
thread I created on this building a couple weeks ago is in the Construction forum
