Oh, Portland has a nightlife. It's not Vegas/New York/L.A. but we have a pretty fleshed out set of options. It's just a more PDX/DIY sort of approach. We don't require ready-made fashionable destination lounges, though we have a good deal of those (Doug Fir, Tube, Mint, Crush, Ect...). We take existing spots and through an influx of trendsters/scenesters make them a destination point. Case in point; Sandy Hut, a dive bar if one ever truely existed, yet however I would challenge anyone to find two empty tables on any night from Thursday to Sunday. Look around at any number of other bars that would be considered trashy and you'll find a chic bloc filling them up on a regular basis. Throw in the fact that Portland has a well developed grassroots house party scene that has on average three to five advertised parties on any given night within the forementioned Thursday-Sunday period. These can fill houses regularly with 100+ people and often feature a number of local bands, making it officially an 'event'. Throw in the crowds down in the Shanghai Tunnels/XV/Berbati's/Cpt. Ankeny's block and those surrounding it on any given weekend night, the NW 21st bars, the above 39th and Hawthorne area, and the multitude of other gathering points and watering holes that offer everything from Trivia to Karaoke to Spelling Bee's to Jazz Nights to Spoken Word and Poetry performances. I'm sorry if this has run on a ways, but it irks me slightly when people say Portland doesn't have a nightlife. We have tons, we just don't need to all gather together to ohh and ahh over each other's ostentation. We've got homegrown community with our own little spots, and any attempt to change that has only led to sleazy flesh markets (See: Barracuda, Voodoo Lounge, H20) that exemplify everything that Portland is not: gaudy, specious, and pretentious.
