Beautiful photos! The city looks like a very pleasant place; I love the photo with the tulips.

Very nice series.

This is what I really like about this web site. It gives you a chance to see pictures of many places we will likely never have the opportunity to visit.

Thank, you!
Well, I'm proud of it for sure.
This is almost the same view 3 years ago (2004). It is changed!

Hi Siberian,

Thanks for your wonderful pictures. I did a google search for Barnaul and came acress this interesting web site. (Now I can do some more 'virtual tourism'). Barnaul looks like a great city for walking around. Especially for a photographer. I do hope they can restore more of those old buildings.

I learned about Barnaul as a sort of gateway city for whitewater rafting and trekking in the mountains. I was suprised that there were no mountains in any of the pictures. Are there any that are visible from town, or are they too far away ?

Another suprise was when I follwed the link someone posted to google earth. It looks like there are several really huge geological features running southwest down to the border of Kazakhstan; are these glacial scrapes ? They don't appear to be filled with water. What do they look like "in person" ? (I'll try to post an image.)

Finally, I grew up in Louisiana, in the "deep" south of the USA. I remember a lot of trees painted white around the base. My understanding was that the white surface made it extremely easy for birds to see insects; either the insects would avoid the white area or they would be eaten. Interesting to see the same technique on the opposite side of the world !

Thanks again for your pictures.

Here's that google earth image. Barnaul is at the tip of the green arrow, the border w/ Kazakhstan is in white.

Hi, Jeff. Why do you search for Barnaul? Did you hear something interesting about the place?

Well Barnaul located 200 km north of mountains, it's not as far, but they're not visible from Barnaul. They're not visible even from Biysk, the city located closer to the mountains. Barnaul is gateway, because it's the capital of Altai region, here is located large airport, it's transportation hub. But there are the plans to build new modern airport closer to the mountains. Near Biysk.

Hmm, I don't know. There is steppe in the area and the tape pine forests along the small rivers. Actually, this feature is quite unique, I heard about the same things in Canada...

Excellent pics, Siberian!

How tall's the tallest building (is that the new one with the angular (pointed) top?)) in your city? And are there any even taller ones planned for the near future?

Random daydreaming, mainly. I was reading online about whitewater rafting trips in the Altai region. It looks spectacular ! And it seems like a fun way to spend time in a foreign country. I've been interested in Russia for a while (history, literature, language) and think I would like to go there some day.

On the map it looks like they're "just over there". It's really hard to keep in mind just how huge Russia is. I used to think driving across Texas took patience....

You're welcome
The tallest one is the 25 floor (86 meter tall) almost completed residential building.
Here is the more close pic of the complex...

There are planned taller buildings for sure, for example two these projects...
These are approved 3 30-floor buildings

And this proposed complex with 37 floor tallest building.

It's so nice to see pictures of a place that I've never heard of before and find it to be such a vibrant city. And the skyline is quite nice for a city that size (according to wikipedia it's about 600,000?). I really enjoy seeing these other cities in Russia so thank you.

You have now answered a question I always wanted to know: Do they have Mexican food in Russia?

Yes, it's about 600,000 and 700,000 with metro population.
