Bathurst unfortunately is suffering the fate of many out of the way towns dependent on resource industries for survival.........
Moncton succeeded, as you state, because of a conscious effort to diversify it's economy
but it has other advantages that Bathurst does not.
- location, location, location.
- a reasonable educational infrastructure in both languages that encourages young people to stay.
- a positive attitude.
Bathurst has neither an anglophone or francophone university campus. Young people move away for education and don't come back. I imagine this is a huge issue for the anglophone community in particular. When they go to the south for university, they discover a whole new world where language is not so important for personal advancement. If you can be successful in your first language in a prosperous community, why would you go back?
Bathurst used to be about 50% English. In another 20 years, I imagine that will be reduced to 20% or less. You can't take that many people out of a community without it having serious ramifications on it's economy......
I imagine these views might not be popular, so I am bracing myself for the response now.
