Hmm, I thought the Kamotiq Office Complex was already finished construction, isn't this the same office building that has the new First Nations Bank of Canada branch?

Some great looking 'northern' architecture going up in Iqaluit. Will help the city to form an identity as a capital city, no doubt.

For the north, Iqaluit sure is taking off. If only we had newer and better subs and kept them in a deep-sea port/submarine base in Iqaluit.

Nunavut spinoffs for Churchill
Contracting firm with booming business sees port as key

Quote:
Business at a Nunavut contracting company is booming and its owners say Churchill will play an increasingly important role as its preferred supply-chain route.

Allan Lahure has seen business at his Baker Lake Contracting & Supplies company grow steadily, helped by the opening last year of Agnico-Eagle's Meadowbank gold mine, 70 kilometres north of Baker Lake.

Ten new mines to boost Nunavut’s infrastructure: NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines
"A tremendous opportunity for local arrangements to construct, to maintain and to operate this infrastructure"

Quote:
Ten huge mines, poised to move into production in Nunavut within the next 10 years, may fuel the ports, roads and other infrastructure Nunavut badly needs: that was the message from Tom Hoefer, executive director of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Chamber of Mines, at the recent Nunavut Trade Show and Conference in Iqaluit.

“Hopefully, the time has come for some of these projects, the majority of which are more than 20 years old,” Hoefer said in his Sept. 27 presentation at a panel discussion on “Nunavut: The Next Decade — Getting Your Share of Major Developments,” now posted on the chamber’s website.

Mines can be a powerful driver to new infrastructure, he said, leading to the construction of ice roads, all-weather roads, ports, railroads and hydoelectric developments.

In Nunavut, some 600 kilometres of roads could be required, he said.

Great news! Good for the Nunavummiut and the whole of Canada!

Do you know the names and or locations of any of the proposed mines?

There is a great deal of info including a rudimentary map in Tom Hoefer's presentation which was quoted in the article. You can d/l the presentation in pdf format here:

You are starting to see the intial investment happening in Rankin Inlet and Chesterfied Inlet. With Addition and Expansions to hotels and an incredible amount of new housing Rankin is getting 2- 30 and 40 unit apartments.

Does anyone have any information on any highrise or lowrise developments going on in Yellowknife? Seems that city has been largely left out of the current nation-wide highrise construction boom.

Also, any concrete proposals out of Iqaluit lately would be fantastic.

No major highrise work planned for the next little while. The INAC proposal was just that and I have not heard if it is going ahead. The only exciting work is going on Underground. Using the Conn Mine for district heating.

As for Iqaluit. Everything is in the proposal or study phase. But I hear the NAC repurposing is moving forward.

The mine is only 200 km north of Mistassini, south of the Nunavik border.
