I think the big difference between Ottawa and Hamilton is that Hamilton has very uniform neighbourhoods. Ottawa has more eclectic streetscapes, you'll never see streets like these in Ottawa. I guess this is the precursor to suburbia.

Even with the reflection, this is definitely one of my all-time favourite Flar shots. It's not often we get that view of downtown or perhaps we could call it 'uptown.' Love it.

Excellent photo thread! I had a chance to see just a small sliver of Hamilton last weekend when I was taking mikecleveland back home, and I thought Hamilton was a pretty cool place. Honestly, it really DOES kind of remind me of Pittsburgh, though that probably has a lot to do with the steel mills and other heavy manufacturing that still goes on around Hamilton!

Perhaps. It hits me like a ton of bricks every time I leave Toronto and go to Hamilton or the Maritimes.

To me, streets like that scream industrial boom-town, the neighborhoods were developed rapidly.

Living in Hamilton you don't realize the change until you see pictures like this. Hamilton has come a long way. Still much to do though.

It developed very rapidly around the 1910s.

It reminds me of the "house built in a day"

Here's the finished product, I think it was demolished in the 60s or 70s.

Good stuff. I actually like all the row houses. But they are much cooler when people go and paint them up to give them more personality.

hmm, maybe take a page from your fellow hamilton to the south to up the pr game?

hamilton, ohio once officially renamed itself hamilton!

yes with the exclamation point.

not sure if they are still spelling it that way anymore, but i am sure they would allow the canadian hamilton to use it too.

that's all i got -- anyway beautiful pics!

you just gotta love those solid rows. Even if the architecture is lacking, just the visual uniformity and density make up for that....

I haven't seen too many photos of Hamilton, so these have been a real eye-opener. Thanks for posting these

Amazing the "Pittsburgh" vibe it gives off. Hell, even the CFL team's colors are the same as the Steelers'

This Hamilton might as well rename itself Burlington (that's what google maps seems to call it, anyways)

Thanks for the comments!

I worked in Hamilton a few times when I lived in the GTA. It's a city that has lots of potential.

Nice tour. Great old capital city. Spent a night once in Ottawa, very late, had a blast. Next day, sledding adventure into Quebec.
