It was, as the carved letters on the sandstone above the front doors proclaimed, although I do not know when Imperial vacated the building. You might recall some mention that prior to them moving there mid-20th century, they were in the building on the corner of Upper Water and Duke (the former O'Carroll's restaurant) that after much kicking and screaming by heritage lobbyists eventually became Waterside Centre.

Yes, I do recall that the O'Carroll's building was originally occupied by Imperial Oil, and now this adds another piece to the lineage of that office (not that I've been trying to piece it together, but when it falls in your lap...).

I actually really like reading about the little bits and pieces of the histories of these buildings. Soon it will be just another one of those "then and now" pic collages on facebook...

This is one of the funniest things I've read in a long time. It reminds me of a saying that used to circulate around some of the guys I went to school with: "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with BS...".

Building permit has been issued for this site;

1190 BARRINGTON STREET - $21.0M - 8 FL - 73 UNITS - RESIDENTIAL & RETAIL

I guess a demolition permit for the existing building will be the start of construction for this one.

Either way maybe it'll be torn down in 2050 and replaced with another building that is 4 storeys taller.

I assume this is the expected look since it's the only one on their site?

Building is now down. Since the building permit is approved and construction signage is up I'll consider this under construction.

Bloody Hell. This gets uglier with each new rendering.

Look on the bright side. At least it isn't a version of the Highfield Park Special like what is on the opposite corner.

It really wouldn't take much effort and probably not a whole lot of extra cost to build something that is a nod to the previous handsome building that used to occupy this lot, but no....

I suspect we are at the stage now where the various HRM approval bodies are in such a frenzy to get housing built that subjective assessments of good vs bad design are largely tossed out the window.

This is atrocious. Looks a lot like a low-budget suburban office-over-retail circa 2002. With land values and rent prices where they are in Halifax, we should really be starting to increase the standard of architecture in our new builds. I would find the blandness slightly more acceptable if the building were at least twice as tall, thus making good use of prime downtown real estate.

Really. This is not an improvement (from an exterior perspective) over what was there before, in my opinion. It's right on a major axis for the park across the street though. Given that, it really seems like an urban design misstep: borders on a prominent park (and as we get denser, these open spaces become more important), in the core of the city, in/adjacent to heritage areas... I'm not feeling great about this.

I can't even imagine a builder wanting their name attached to a building that looks like this.

Can't tell if its a trick of the eye or not but does it seem to anyone else that the floor spacing of the "tower" above the podium is excedingly high? A further sqandered opportunity to wedge in another floor and maximize occupancy in a building that appears to be making no attempt at aethectics.

Really stark illustration of the hugely varying quality of development right now. On one corner here is what's turning out to be the pretty painstaking and careful relocation and restoration of the Elmwood Hotel. And then here this office-park-looking job.

The block surrounding Cornwallis Park had tremendous potential to have an European flare if developed properly. Instead, systematically the entire block has been transformed into the most basic built form. Low quality architecture in this area is a testament to the inability of HRM to recognize what an asset quality planning and architecture is, and that it should be a number one priority for new developments in all of HRM. The below links paint a massive lost opportunity and a very sad picture. This must change!
