^^^it came out nicely. A shame that we can get 5-stories pretty comfortably at 1430 South - but on Broad Street, just a few steps away, the NIMBY's went nuts over the 7-story South Star lofts and almost killed it.

Imo too much rec space, could become a rec ghetto if it's not really utilized. Would be a better bet if like only just a soccer field or tennis ball court etc and the rest be a walk through garden.

Shrug. Don't disagree, but the plan is already reducing the rec space, reducing it more isn't politically feasible.

Columbus Square and that spot across from Pat's/Geno's (what's its name again? I just saw it -- Capitolo?) are pretty much the only two decent-sized parks/rec centers in a pretty large chunk of South Philly. The problem Columbus has is essentially that there are too many incompatible uses that need to be accommodated on not enough park space.

"Rec ghetto"? That's a new one. I can promise you the rec space here will NOT be underutilized. The current configuration actually has more rec space, as the field is larger than the above proposal and it IS used on a daily basis. Every evening there is one or more of soccer, kickball, ultimate frisbee, flag football, baseball, or softball game going on. The current field actually has two baseball diamonds. Taney Baseball utilizes this space for some of their tee-ball and little league games in the spring and summer.

I know this because I live several blocks away from Columbus Square Park. I have coached for Taney. I take my sons there often to practice soccer and baseball. Although the proposal looks nice, the current, HEAVILY USED, grass rec space will be REDUCED, with the removal of one of the diamonds and a considerable portion of the grass playing field on the south side, probably resulting in the loss of having more than one sporting activity possible simultaneously, which happens on most nights here.

I'm not sure if you live in the East Passyunk neighborhood or not ... or if you even live and raise kids in the city, but let me assure you - it is NOT easy finding available green space to let your kids kick around a ball, or maybe even hold a team practice. So I sort of bristle when I read posts like yours that call for the removal of recreational green only to replace it with a botanical garden that you would probably never walk through. And I apologize if I sound like I am getting personal - I just don't care for the content of your post.

If you want families to live in the city, you need rec space. Obviously it puts limits on how interesting the landscaping can be, but people using the park want rec space. And seems like users should be the main consideration. Definitely an improvement on the park now.

Not much new info there. Very little has been written about the status of this project which is interesting for such a high profile building and location. It does appear that additional permits have been issued which indicates its finally moving forward, but that sign and anticipated completion time must only apply to facade repairs.

The ball fields on the parkway are a rec ghetto. I've never seen them used so effectively every time I walk past / through it's just ugly barren dirt with the rest being a painfully boring grass field.

Maybe I should have used the term rec wasteland.

Yea, but this is different. South Philly has a comparative lack of green space and there are tons of families in the neighborhood. Those ball fields on the Parkway are in a bad location.
