W00T!
Somehow I ended up at Fashion Place yesterday and was surprised to see how busy it was. The Lego store will be near the middle of the east/west running hall (I believe next to GAP). If anyone you know is looking for work, they are hiring 'Brick Specialists' at jobs.lego.com

I just visited the LEGO store while I was in Portland over the weekend. I sure hope we get a bigger one than that one at Fashion Place or at least a larger pick a brick wall. I am sure most of my spending at the LEGO store will be buying individual bricks. I have some modular buildings that are no longer being sold that I need to find parts for. Tip for filling the 14.99 tub is to stack the bricks and to pack them so they fit tight. just poring a bunch in and shacking it does not maximize how many you can get.

For the record, the opening on September 20th is the "soft opening" -- the "Grand Opening" with special sales and giveaways and stuff is October 4, 5, and 6.

Just because someone chooses to not live in one particular city, such as WVC or Lehi, doesn't mean that they don't impact the expenses of the city. WVC and Lehi have to deal with the impact of Kearns and Saratoga Springs residents as they drive through their city, using that cities roads of which the taxes collected by those cities pays for.

This is just one example of how a geographic border for taxing purposes isn't entirely effective at paying for services within that same geographic border.

WVC can't simply annex whatever it wants without consent of the property owners being annexed, simply because it wants to increase it's tax base. If those commercial areas of Kearns didn't want to be annexed in to WVC or West Jordan then they could have voted no, or not signed the annexation petition. No not all the property owners have to be in favor, but a majority do, so obviously WVC or W Jordan looked like a much better option for the majority of the land owners.

Yeah, I understand that. And I don't really think Kearns would have ever had the tax base or the population or the leadership to incorporate and become its own city. I'm of the opinion that Salt Lake County should really be one city for most intents and purposes, and all these small cities and townships that blend into each other could/should just be incorporated into one body.

I'm just expressing the opinion of many of the neighbors who voted down the ZIP Code name change -- they saw the shopping centers that could have contributed to a Kearns tax base carved away by West Valley City to the north and west, Taylorsville to the east, and West Jordan to the south. And sure, the property owners probably agreed to it. The residents who were left out of those votes are the ones who finally had a say on the ZIP Code thing, and they said it.

I see where the Sears store at Fashion Place is going to be torn down and replaced by a new larger Dillards. After the new Dillards is constructed they'll redevelop the Northeast wing of the Mall and former Dillards. It will be interesting to see what new Stores come to the newly developed area of the former Dillards.

Has anyone checked out the Acquarium Construction site lately? How's that coming along?

That's good because the northwest wing is embarrassing to the rest of the mall.

Construction Fences Go Up At Park City's Main Street Mall

http://ski.curbed.com

courtesy of ElliottWorkGroup

Wednesday, August 7, 2013, by Ryan Dunfee of Curbed Ski

The Park Record is reporting that construction fences have gone up around the Main Street Mall in Park City in anticipation of a sizable renovation that will
redo the Main Street facade while converting the upper three floors to residential units, with floorplans ranging from 1,500 to 3,500 square feet and a top-
story penthouse. Eight retail storefronts will remain on the first floor facing Main Street, but the interior retail spaces that had so much trouble pulling
customers off of Park City's main boulevard will go.

Local architects Elliot Workgroup have been hired for the project, and has announced they'll be putting in a rooftop pool along with gardens and patios.
The Main Street Mall redevelopment marks another significant renovation for Park City's Main Street, following in the path of others like the Silver Queen
Hotel who are similarly converting existing building into a mix of retail, condos, and penthouses.

Long-sought remake of the Main Street Mall starts
The project will include storefronts and 15 condominiums upstairs

Jay Hamburger - The Park Record

http://www.parkrecord.com/news/ci_23...rts?source=rss

Developers have started work on what will be a major redo of the Main Street Mall building that will include condominiums on the upstairs floors and
storefronts below.

The building will no longer operate as a traditional mall. Businesses had moved out of the mall previously. Construction fences went up in recent days,
signaling that work will be occurring.

City Hall officials have found that the designs meet the historic district's strict guidelines and have issued a permit to demolish the interior walls and the
architectural features on the outside walls. The overall project has been approved, but officials have not issued a building permit.

The project will entail 15 condominiums ranging in size from 1,350 square feet to 3,500 square feet. There were no residences in the building when it
operated as the Main Street Mall. There will be retail space on the Main Street level and a lower level. Eight storefronts are planned on the Main Street
level with doors opening to the sidewalk.

The condominiums will be built in the two upstairs levels. One additional level will be built for a penthouse unit. That level, though, will not stretch across
the full footprint of the building.

A pool, gardens and terraces are planned for the rooftop.

The Main Street Mall was long seen as an underperforming commercial property as stores struggled to attract people inside from the sidewalk. There have
been ideas to redo the building for years, but none of them advanced until the current one.

The building is owned by a firm known as AG-WIP 333 Main Street Owner, LLC, according to Summit County property records. The records show an address
in care of an entity in New York City called Angelo Gordon & Co. LP. The County Courthouse values the building and the land it sits on at nearly $6.2
million. A representative did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Kirsten Whetstone, a City Hall planner assigned to the project, said officials will require the developers submit a report from an arborist detailing any trees
that will be removed from the Park Avenue side of the building during the work.

A neighborhood meeting is planned later in August to discuss what might happen to the trees and outline a proposed plan for the landscaping, Whetstone
said. The date for the neighborhood meeting has not been set.

The work at the building will continue a streak of heavy investment along Main Street in the period since Park City emerged from the depths of the
recession. Other buildings have undergone major renovations and work is continuing or planned on a few more.

I was pretty bummed that the plan to demolish the Main St. Mall fell through. I'd rather see something entirely new built there, but I guess remodeling it is better than nothing.

eBay expands massive new flagship data center in South Jordan

Tech » New phase of company’s data center in S. Jordan will be cleanest and greenest of its kind."

By Vince Horiuchi | The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/5...mpany.html.csp

Online commerce and payments company, eBay, is opening the second phase of its massive data center in South Jordan Thursday, a building that executives are calling one of the greenest and cleanest of its kind in the world.

"It’s a first inside of Utah and setting an example for the rest of the country and the world," said Dean Nelson, vice president of foundation services for eBay Inc...

...The new building, which is connected to an existing building known as "phase one," will generate most of its own electricity to power the entire data center.

The new addition uses Bloom Energy Servers, special fuel cells that operate from natural gas. With these special cells and other energy-efficient hardware from HP and Dell, three-quarters of the 8 megawatts of electricity needed to run the data center will be self-generated by eBay instead of from the local power utility, Nelson said.

Additionally, eBay is working with another company, Ormat, to build an off-site heat waste recovery plant that will take the heat from the natural gas pipeline it uses to generate more electricity through turbines. That plant will be completed in about 18 months.

"In Utah, we’re making one of the cleanest and greenest commerce transactions possible," Nelson said...

Booting Up: New NSA Data Farm Takes Root In Utah

by Howard Berkes - September 23, 2013 5:39 PM

The National Security Agency says its massive new data center near Salt Lake City will enhance the agency's ability to analyze the email, text message, cellphone and landline metadata it collects. Rick Bowmer/AP

The National Security Agency won't say exactly when it will fully rev up its newest and biggest data farm in the Salt Lake City suburb of Bluffdale, Utah. There will be no "grand opening" or celebratory barbecue outside the sprawling facility, which is five times the size of the Ikea down the road.

But, according to NSA spokeswoman Vanee' Vines, "We turn each machine on as it is installed, and the facility is ready for that installation to begin."

Those machines are computer servers — enough to fill four warehouse-size "data halls" covering 100,000 square feet.

NSA won't say how many servers are involved or reveal the data capacity of the $1.2 billion Utah Data Center. But running the complex requires 65 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 65,000 homes. The electronics generate so much heat that they would fry without 1.5 million gallons of cooling water a day.

More than 1 million additional square feet here are devoted to generators, diesel storage tanks, power substations, backup battery banks, water tanks, chilling plants and an office building... READ MORE - http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechcons...s-root-in-utah

Cool building, and very amazing technology to produce its own energy. I wish we could get a better image or photo of the building. It looks very cool from the Trib photos. http://www.sltrib.com/csp/cms/sites/...38&pid=5554306

The ironic part about it, is that while the building may be the greenest around, it is still surrounded by a sea of parking. Unless they get a very large percentage of employees to use Front Runner, or move really close to the building, all that efficiency that the building is creating is negated by the huge number of employees driving their cars to this suburban location.

I hope that they encourage their employees, and give them incentives to use Front Runner, I would say if 95% of the employees drive then all the green/energy savings means a whole lot of nothing.

It comes down to this, I live three miles from downtown. If I work downtown and drive my gas guzzler jeep to an urban center for work, can walk to lunch, can walk to a restaurant or a Jazz game after work, and walk to the store from my house, I am actually greener than someone that commutes 20 miles in their prius to a green office in the burbs, has to drive to the store, and every other activity they do.

There are two separate ebay facilities. The new office building in Draper by Frontrunner is what I think you are meaning when you say sea of parking. This data center is in or near Daybreak I believe. Not sure the proximity to the Trax stations out there.

On my commute to Murray from Riverton each day, I drive past the road in Draper at 7th west that accesses the new Ebay building and the long line of cars waiting to turn left. If Draper is serious about building the amount of offices in that area, there is going to have to be some serious road improvements or a bigger emphasis for transit. I do see some work on a south access road that would connect to the IKEA road but it is not close to being ready yet.
