t2, was it the mid-1960s when you took the kids to Greystone? (I ask because as you no doubt noticed, the Times pic was dated 1965)
Now I'm really baffled about the playhouse.

sidenote:
I would go up to Greystone to read back in the 1980s. -away from noisy traffic and extremely quiet....with no one else around.
Before I'd leave I would make sure to peek in all the windows for ghosts. I've never been inside (except in movies and television shows)


And one more thing t2, thanks for clearing up that Evelyn Nesbit/grandson quote about the censored artwork.

When I saw the delicate-looking wrought iron cross on the roof I surmised it was either long gone or moved inside, perhaps somewhere near or on the alter.

Much to my surprise it's still there and still in the same spot!

there's a mural in the corner that made me think 'medieval', say Old King Cole (cape, pointy shoes and ermine collar)

This is one of Julius Shulman's later photosets. It's "Job 5611: Art Ansoorian, Kubota Tractor Company (Compton, Calif.), 1978".



I've lightened this second image a little.



I think this garden area was around the back. This time I've stayed with the color images. Two of the black & white images are similar to the color ones, and the other two just have different angles.

Kubota relocated to Torrance around 1993, but have since moved to Texas. The building, however, is still standing at 550 W Artesia Boulevard, Compton. It's hard to get a good picture from the road, so I went with an aerial view. If the garden still exists, it's under the large trees behind the right side of the front building.

My dad would tell me this story all the time. When his first single came out in 1961 on Liberty, he told my grandmother to go to every single record store in the area and buy out all of his singles...so granny goes to music city and buys all of his singles..the problem is she didn't go to anywhere else..the funny part was the fact that Bullocks/ I. Magnin got a few of his singles in and Granny who worked for the owners never thought about buying them out.

Hmmm. I don't even know if it was on NBC, but perhaps it was a promotion for Cheyenne? Wasn't Cheyenne raised by injuns or some such? Feathers--Native Americans...bows and arrows. must be some reason Clint came to mind.

The painting has a definite Maxfield Parrish feel to it, but I didn't locate it doing a Google Image search. Maybe another artist working in Parrish's style. It looks like a signature in the left corner, but it's too blurry to read. The King Cole Bar is in the St. Regis Hotel in NYC.

I wondered where this was taken. Did they stay up north for training? The background looks pretty desolate.

But I took a look from the Rose Bowl:

LOL, no e_r, the kids were born between '81 & '90, so we were up there in late 80s into the 90s I guess. When the AFI had Greystone we would go there for events inside the house, but I think I was pretty familiar w/ the grounds then too. Bit of a blur now, but I don't recall that playhouse.
