MTA to host town hall Wednesday on Interborough Express rail line from Brooklyn to Queens

By Aidan Graham
Posted on August 15, 2023

The MTA is gearing up to host a virtual public town hall on the Interborough Express project on Wednesday, where it will update the community about the progress being made on the plan that would connect the underserved areas of Brooklyn and Queens.

The meeting is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. and last for an hour.

Attendees will get the latest updates on the Interborough Express concept, including a critical Planning and Environmental Linkages study.

MTA adding midday trains to N and R subway lines, shortening wait times

By Ben Brachfeld
Posted on August 22, 2023

...

Earlier this month, the MTA announced it would boost weekend service on the 1 and 6 lines, just days after saying weekday headways would increase on the C line. Before that, a similar announcement was made for weekend service on the G, J, and M lines. The MTA is expected to make similar announcements in December and next July.

The service expansion across 12 lines is being funded by $35 million set aside in the $229 billion state budget passed back in May, which stabilized the MTA’s teetering post-COVID finances and also set aside money to pilot free bus service on five lines, one in each borough.

Roosevelt Island Tram outfitted with OMNY tap-to-pay system

By Ben Brachfeld
Posted on August 24, 2023

Riders of the Roosevelt Island Tram can now pay for a trip on the city’s only aerial cable car using OMNY, making it the city’s first transit option not run by MTA to be outfitted with the tap-to-pay system.

The tram, which was the nation’s first commuter cable car when it opened in 1976, connects Roosevelt Island to the east side of Manhattan.

Get Excited: OMNY Is Coming to the JFK AirTrain in ‘Three or Four Months,’ Maybe

Only of the many indignities experienced by travelers taking mass transit to JFK Airport will (maybe) be addressed this fall.

11:46 AM EDT on August 25, 2023
By Christopher Robbins

Travelers attempting to take mass transit to JFK Airport have long been punished. First, they are confronted with comically massive lines for the (often broken) MetroCard machines, because the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the AirTrain, does not accept the MTA's OMNY tap-to-pay system. Then, these people are charged $8.25 for a one-way ticket on what is essentially a sad carnival ride, where they are then deposited to a place that has some of the most expensive cellophane-wrapped turkey sandwiches in the world.

Only one of those indignities will be addressed this fall.

At a press conference on Thursday, MTA CEO Janno Lieber said that OMNY will be available for AirTrain customers "in three or four months."

Two dozen pols sign letter calling for taxi, for-hire vehicle exemption from congestion pricing

By Ben Brachfeld
Posted on August 16, 2023

Cabbies are just one of dozens of groups seeking an out from congestion pricing.

The MTA declined to comment. The TMRB’s second meeting will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday at MTA Headquarters in lower Manhattan.

After a long environmental review process, the program is set to be implemented in the middle of next year, and a contractor has begun setting up overhead gantries to collect tolls. Still, the program faces headwinds with a lawsuit filed by New Jersey seeking to terminate it.
