The various tallyho stage lines preceded the introduction of motor buses. When someone wanted to go a moderate long distance they caught the tallyho.

If they wanted to go across states or across country they usually got the trains.

Yes, that's either me or my (older) brother in front of Clifton's. To me, it looks more like my brother (my hair has a bit of a wave), and maybe I was taking the photo; but my brother says he thinks it's me. So the experts are divided on this one.

I love "flappers"--this 1930 gal is about the last of them--when the stock market crashed and the depression started, grim reality upset the mood. Of course WW2 was grim, but we all pulled together with purpose. Noir at its heart is cynical and dark. The WW2 period was dark but not cynical.

I like the television set, seems upscale for 1948.

It's not clear from the syntax above that the tavern was actually called "Ernie's bar." Maybe it was owned by Ernie and called something else? But assuming the former, the 1956 street directory lists: Ernie's Cafe at 4321 S Vermont, Ernie's Club Cafe at 1470 W Santa Barbara, Ernie's Cafe at 5221 Hollywood Blvd, Ernie's Tavern at 6520 S Fig.

Of these, only the Hollywood one is still there and still a bar:

Of course Ernie's bar might have been just about anywhere in LA...and not named "Ernie's Café" at all...but there was an Ernie's Café at 5221 Hollywood Boulevard...which is now, if not then, covered in...rocks! Apparently it was owned by a Peter J. Lombardi.... and there was a little noir happening there in 1948. I didn't dig further to see if little Marilyn Jean's death may have been the result of foul play... Peter to Martha: "we've got to get the kid outta the way"....

Ii was a bit presumptuous to automatically think the Ernie's bar was actually named' Ernie's Bar'.
I'm going to go back to ozfan22 flickr albums and see if he ever mentions Ernie's last name. (to look him up in the city directory)

Lots of editing and cross posting confusions

GW and Lorendoc, the plot just thickened.

After snooping around a bit more, I've come to the conclusion that we have seen Ernie before on NLA! I just didn't realize it was the SAME Ernie.


The below photograph is dated 1945 (three years before the 'Ernie's bar' photograph)

Excellent recognition, e_r, I agree.

9700 S. Main has a building permit (not online) from 1927. There is a new permit construction issued to David Mings for a restaurant/cafe in 1945. This subsequently became a union hall, and until recently was:

(demolition permit issued 2015 for a residential duplex.) The earliest historic aerial is from 1952 and looks more like a building than a gas station.

The address may be wrong, as there seems to never have been a gas station at 9700 S Main. There was a station at 9701 though, according to ladbs (or maybe we're in Burbank)
