Yuletide

For those of you who are devotees of the Julian calendar, I hope you have as merry a Christmas as my Winter Solstice turned out to be. Happy Yuletide ("wheel turn").

Santa Rosa Avenue, Altadena (1960)

My aunt drove me down this street when I was about 9 years old....the scale is quite daunting for a child.

I generally follow the Xiuhpohualli calendar ...fixed (365 days) Pre-Columbian (Aztec) ...its very reliable and never lets you down.

Cheers everyone in the New Year....whatever year you follow.

Merry Christmas to everyone on NLA.

Here's a 1953 image showing 4432 Forman Avenue in Toluca Lake (just north of Universal Studios) decorated for the season.

Even at Christmas, I couldn't resist a "now" shot .

Am I the only one who can't view any images hosted at googleusercontent.com in Firefox on my mac? I have to open every post by tovangar2 in chrome to view images. None of the image links have a file extension (.jpg,.png, .gif,. bmp, etc), so the images don't show up because Firefox doesn't find them)

Image issues aside, I thought I'd share a dashcam video I made of Christmas Tree lane two years ago.

Merry Christmas

They don't show up in Firefox for Windows either. I have the same problem with GW's recent images too. It's looks like Firefox is now planning to support .webp images (Google's own file format which is being used by googleusercontent.com), but I can't find a date when this will happen.

Thanks for that info HossC. I'll just keep chrome open on the side for now until Mozilla adds support for .webp.

I remember my father driving us to see this street as a child. It was quite special back in the sixties. Thank you, Lomara, for posting it.

I, too, am having trouble with images not showing up. I'm on a Mac using Safari.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

I haven't been to LA yet, but I am so intrigued by the history of the city. Especially Bunker Hill. These great pics, to me, show the fascinating change that has taken place. Downtown would be far more interesting had Bunker Hill remained.

Interesting point Johnland. The Bunker Hill area was at one time rather suburban. As time went on, the BH area became downtown LA. As a result the BH land became worth millions of dollars per acre. As they say, something had to give.

The two floors of lodge rooms sat on a retail base. Now sadly diminished, although well-maintained, it's been home to The Village Recording Studio since 1968.

T2, surprisingly a good portion of the fraternal spaces have survived.

In the early 1960s the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi used the building as his Los Angeles centre for Transcendental Meditation.

https://www.beatlesbible.com/people/...i-mahesh-yogi/

— several sources say the Beatles meditated in the large auditorium on the first floor.

More prosaically, the building was briefly used as a processing laboratory for color film.

As T2 mentioned earlier today, in 1968 it became 'The Village' Recording Studio.
'The Village' was founded by Geordie Hormel, grandson of the founder of Hormel, the meat-packing company.

Geordie's first wife was actress/dancer Leslie Caron

Geordie eventually married four times, and owned 'The Village' until his death in 2006.

Back to the building:

The former Masonic building looks impressive on 'The Village' website.(despite that awful cornice)

But here's the real surprise.....take a look at the old Masonic meeting room.

Now it's known as the Moroccan Ballroom at 'The Village'.

Stunning isn't it!

one last look.

And finally, here's the auditorium (where the Beatles supposedly meditated back in the 60s)

http://villagestudios.com/studios/auditorium/

The ceiling has been soundproofed but the lighting fixtures look original.

Here's the same view under a different lighting situation. (or aperture setting)

& take a look at this lighting fixture! -wow

_______

If any one of you would like to make me really happy, find a photograph of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and/or the Beatles at this building.
I searched off and on all afternoon and found nothing.

info about the Beatles and film processing lab etc here:
http://www.soundonsound.com/music-bu...rs-los-angeles

Also mentions "numerous secret doors and passages"

sidenote:
I don't see how these beautiful interiors could have survived if the building had been used as a film processing lab.

Happy holidays

Wrong holiday, but here is a picture that only could have been taken in Los Angeles. Abe Lincoln leads a troop of WW I actor-veterans marching north on Spring past what I think is the State Building on Labor Day, 1937. Except for the sashes and doughboy helmets, they look like shop clerks.

The Times building looms patriotically in the distance.

Merry Christmas to all, sorry im a day late.. I took the Amtrak from LA to Dallas which took a day and a half. Anyways here is Christmas 1954 IN COLOR!

Aunt Mildred and My Dad, This was taken in the living room of the family house on Kenwood.

Ten years later..Christmas 1964..

These are my cousins, Tracy, Erin (who became a popular child star..Bad News Bears and Happy Days),Trena, Tony on her lap,and Leslie...Trena is Aunt Mildred's oldest.

and Finally June 1963.. See if you can find my Dad in this photo.

This album was recorded during the summer of 63'..it was released on Nov 22nd and yeah it kinda tanked because of Kennedy, but its the best selling christmas album of all time.

And last but not least is Bullocks Wilshire Lobby 1942..Ive posted it every year since ive been apart of this great group. Hope you guys have a happy holiday.
