Site photogs (Harry, Solar, etc.) you guys should really give your photo chronicles of development to the architecture society or some other group for preservation. It would be a waste to not have all this history of Chicagos construction not saved somewhere.

I was already thinking about doing that at some point, several decades down the road. I have tens of thousands of pictures that I've taken of Chicago during the past eleven years. I post a very small percentage of them here.

The conversion of the single-story building on the SW corner of Huron-Wells to a CVS is well underway - interior demo was done a couple weeks ago and now they have it fenced off and have torn off some of the exterior walls. It'll be interesting to see how it looks when it's fully completed.

In this era of national chains, one solid sign of a vibrant urban core is having a local bodega / convenience mart chain that thrives amid its deep-pocketed competition. It was a little depressing when even the large White Hen was lost to the rather ugly and unappealing 7-Eleven several years ago. (It felt a bit like a smaller-stakes repeat of all the Marshall Fields stores transmogrifying into Macys.)

But now it seems South Loop Market is growing as a new local chain. It seems it's emerging as a brand so well that ... they're about to open up at Wellington & Sheffield -- and keeping their name, South Loop Market. Assuming they aren't going to be stocking exclusively White Sox paraphernelia or something, they've probably got a decent shot at success; they're reasonably sleek and almost every 7-Eleven I've seen is just scuzzy, with filthy exteriors and parking lots. (Or maybe there's just too much north-south partisanship?) The idea that a geographic brand borne of a neighborhood created from scratch two decades ago could suddenly become a new citywide thing is an unusually cool example of neighborhood cross-pollination.

There's also GoGrocer, but I don't know much about their story; they seem like a slightly cleaner and denser 7-Eleven.

Foxtrot on the other hand is more upscale, or at least hipster, but is not as full service as the others.

I was looking at the renderings for 375 N. Morgan again and I have a question. Why does that stretch of Kinzie there between Morgan and Peoria rise up? What was or is there to cause that?

They're also opening a new location at 9th/State, on the ground floor of the Astoria tower, which is of particular note to me as I live mere blocks from there. It's a great local success story, and it's a block south of a 7/11 and a woefully under-stocked Urban Grocer.

These were corporate acquisitions. They had absolutely nothing to do with the vibrancy of Chicago's urban core.

I'm going to get skewered for this, but I don't think this looks terrible. It feels very substantial and vertical, and that steeple is great.

It's like accidental Tigerman-esque Post Modern.
