Not on top of our signature skyscraper, JD.
I'd rather them build out a fresh structure, and I agree, to give a balance to the skyline and respect to the prominence of the USBT, put it in South Park. A mixed use structure, and set the completion date for 4 years from now, when the market resets.

I'm sure most people wouldn't mind if it was somewhat taller. But it was built years and years ago, so regardless of what we would or would not want, it's not going to get any taller. I could "possibly" see it looking alright with 3 ascending crowns. Put another one on top of the one now, but a little smaller, and then another one but a little smaller...but definitely no damn ball on the top

After the last crown, would you like an Antennae?

I'm very happy with it as it is. Just adding on crowns wont really improve the look of the structure. This is going to sound alot like our friend edluva...but how "LA" of us to simply give the building plastic surgery to make it more to our liking!
(grins)
Leave it be...it has a classic design.
But again, nothing wrong with imagining it.

You're right that nothing is wrong with imagining it! The eyes of the beholder, I guess...

Well, it was built in 1988, was it? So it's not THAT old.

US Bank Tower = Classic Beauty
Adding crowns and spires = Breast Implants

We don't want the Joan Rivers of skyscrapers.

JDR, these "what if" scenarios are fine to talk about, but please start another thread in the Los Angeles section of the California sub-forum, and take that discussion there. It would be much more appropriate there than in a thread about actual development downtown.

Alright Colemonkee. BTW, that article earlier that said 1/3 of projects are postponed seems kind of an exaggeration.

Well, to keep colemokee from flogging me, one other thing I heard on the report last night on Eyewitness News regarding the slowing economy was that the Park Fifth sales office reported that they had sold over 300 units, with 8 sold in the last week. They said demand was still very high for the project due to its 'landmark' nature. These developers believe that these developments are mainly for people who want to get away from the suburbs, empty nesters, and young professionals that are not just seeking a new home, but that urban life that is sparely found in Socal. They were also reporting that due to the sucess of the supermarkets and other smaller businesses in the area, there are "several" other chains interested in opening facilities downtown.
This was channel 7 Eyewitness News at 6 PM last nite I believe that I watched this.
It seems that there is still hope!

What do you think has a better chance of breaking ground, guys?

Park Fifth, or Grand Avenue Project? (i'm going with Grand Ave.)

To answer you JD, I would agree "The Grand" has more of a chance. It seems to have more already in place and ready.
On another note, a project that I would REALLY like to see break ground is LA Central. I just think it will add the density in South Park that is needed. I will contend though that they should probably convert the taller tower into hotel space. It was pointed out before that even with the Ritz/Marriot going up, DTLA would still be far behind in rooms compared to OC or SD. Just the buzz of the LA Live has increased Convention Bookings in DTLA. I think it could be tipped by adding more rooms and amenities.
Just my lil ole opinion though!

I seriously think that both Grand Ave, Park Fifth, as well as LA Central will break ground this year. If only those break ground, I would consider that a banner year for LA devlopment not seen since the late 80's and early 90's.

2009 I think will really be the year that downtown will take off.

Those three projects offer the most as far as retail, residential, and commercial use, as well as cache and lure. Grand will go first, followed by LA Central. Park fifth will bring up the rear. It would be a banner year if they all get going. No less than 7 high rises breaking ground in any city in a year is remarkable.
