What happened to "the tallest?"
I wonder what is stopping them from coming out and saying, straight up, "will be the tallest outside of Toronto?". That would be much better marketing, imo.

Three things:

- The podium of the edmonton tower is sexy.
- Congrats to stantec for reaching grade. Let's see it rise
- Do we have any idea on the height of tower b/site b/old greyhound

Tallest building west of Toronto reaches construction milestone for Edmonton's Stantec

A 66-storey building set to make Edmonton’s skyline the highest in Western Canada reached a construction milestone Thursday.

“This is a massive gesture of confidence on the part of Edmontonians to have the audacity to build a building like this,” Mayor Don Iveson said while on site to celebrate the last concrete pour to complete the foundation.
He added that investments in both private and public infrastructure have helped the city weather the provincial economic downturn.
While Stantec is the main tenant, the $500-million skyscraper will also include condo units, retail outlets and office space, including two floors for PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Stantec CEO Bob Gomes said a significant number of employees — 1,700 — will be relocated to Stantec Tower, which will be its new world headquarters.
“From this point onward, we’ll see it move upward,” he said.
The retail space will be ready by mid-2018, while the offices are set to open in 2018. The residential portion is slated to open in fall 2019.
Tower quickfacts:

• The Stantec Tower will be the tallest building in Canada outside of Toronto. It will have one million square feet of space and will stand 250 metres.
• It’s designed to be LEED gold certified and will include office, retail and residential space. This includes 28 floors of offices and approximately 481 residential units.
• PricewaterhouseCoopers plans to move there from the TD Tower in December 2018.
• Stantec is planning to occupy 19 floors of the building. The building will also be home to Dentons Canada LLP.

Edmonton's K-Days will continue despite Northlands threat to pull out, says mayor
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/e...-threat-to-pull-out-says-mayor-1.3708300

Quote:
Mayor Don Iveson says he's confident K-Days will continue next year, even if it doesn't happen at Northlands.

He made the comments in response to Northlands CEO Tim Reid, who said Tuesday that K-Days is in jeopardy next year unless council agrees to fund $165 million in renovations.

Northlands has also asked council to forgive a $47-million loan debt owed to the city for expanding the Expo Centre.

"Council never responds well to being put under that sort of pressure," Iveson said Thursday.

K-Days saw a 2.3-per-cent increase in attendance this year, and Iveson said he expects K-Days will only improve in the future, regardless of who runs it.

"I'm confident there will be a K-Days, or something like it, next year, operated by Northlands, or somebody like it … one way or the other," Iveson said.

Reid later clarified his remarks, saying that it is only Northlands' ability to host K-Days that is in jeopardy.
Quote:
Iveson said council will have to debate whether or not to forgive the Northlands loan before it begins to look at putting new money into the property, which is owned by the city.

He said council won't be rushed into a decision on the massive refurbishment to turn Rexall Place into a hockey multiplex, as well as other proposed improvements to the Northlands site.

He noted council's track record is not as good when it makes decisions too quickly.

Reid said Iveson is right to want to take the time needed to get the project right. But he said it's his job to be clear with council about the financial risk of waiting too long, in the wake of development of the new downtown arena.
Quote:
Iveson said the land is owned by the city, which has ordered Northlands to take no further action.

"Any and all decisions about real estate development on any part of the Northlands campus would be a city decision," Iveson said.

He's just telling it like it is

Tim's a good guy, probably regrets moving here and taking the job though. This city really screwed him over

$20 million in grants a year, $7 million loss on the Expo Centre and now they can't pay the City back for the remaining money owed on the Expo Centre (which $75 million was given to them on top of the City's portion). The cherry on top is trying to extort $220 million from the City or the K-Days fair gets axed, see ya Tim, it was a displeasure getting to know you.

This organization is poorly run and needs to be drastically changed, blaming all your woes on the new arena is getting old and smells worse than their horse paddocks.

Hicks on biz: Farewell to Northlands as we know it

Graham Hicks BY GRAHAM HICKS
FIRST POSTED: FRIDAY, AUGUST 05, 2016 09:37 AM MDT

Northlands in its current form will no longer exist after its visit with Edmonton City Council later this month, though it may emerge as a much smaller organization.

Edmonton city council will be feeling guilty about yanking the rug out from under Northlands’ feet – opting to build the snazzy new downtown arena with the Oilers, instead of renovating Rexall Place with Northlands. That one move guaranteed Northlands’ current perilous financial state.

But there’s no way on God’s Little Green Prairie that city hall is going to fund the capital costs of Northlands’ no-arena “Vision 2020” that’s coming to council for discussion.

Guilt is not enough rationale to fork over $215 million to the venerable, not-for-profit organization to fulfill its “Vision 2020” wish list/survival plan. And certainly not enough reason to write off the Northlands EXPO Centre’s $45 million mortgage as well.

The projects Northlands is proposing - a community hockey rink complex ($80 million price tag), a mega-outdoor festival area ($45 million) and a 5,000 seat arena ($35 million) – are far too rich, too vague, and are not pressing priorities within Metropolitan Edmonton’s long-term leisure and recreational needs.

The “Vision 2020” plan is cute. But not needed.
Quote:
Remember that Northlands has no money. It made money off Rexall Place, but used that money to subsidize its money-losing operations – like the EXPO Centre.

New 8 unit rowhouse development coming for 92st in McCauley. Looks quite sharp.

All grade beams are in for the LittleJohn mixed use project on 111th

We tallied up the DP's for the Alberta Avenue tri-neighbourhoods area last night, was quite pleasantly surprised to see this level of infill in the area for the first half of 2016

11 semi detached (2 units per)
6 row
2 garden/ garage suite
5 SFH
96 apartment units (3 buildings)
2 50' lots split

My son-in law is developing a few of those projects and has completed a number already.

Rumour mill time:

Apparently a prominent local division of a software company involved in the entertainment business (you know the one) is possibly looking to move downtown from their current relatively suburban location.

It's very much hearsay and speculation, but it is from the inside. Apparently the senior staff want a location with a little more prestige for the sake of out-of-town guests, closer to more and better restaurant and entertainment options.

^ old news... Was working on that 6 months ago

The neat part is the space that they've optioned. Very unconventional and very unique

Won't help clear the glut of available commercial space though

Yeah they sell fast, infill in the area has always moved. But now the market is falling out on the higher end properties, but in affordable areas like this, Inglewood etc there seems to be continued demand

I would think their plans would be on hold because the NDP put a kibosh on the blood collection outsource bid.

That's certainly been a rumour for a few months indeed. I'd love to see them in the UW or a cool old warehouse in the North Edge.

Curious.
