I have heard rumors of a multi year, phased rebuild of the DC during the off seasons. But, like others have said. I don't know how that would work.

I could have seen that as the original intention before the investment we got a couple months ago. But I would be surprised if it's not a new arena.

In the 90s, the Jazz had a decent rivalry with the Sonics so I say Fuck the Kraken.

I'm genuinely shocked this came together this quickly. I really thought there was almost no chance of it happening. The only thing that makes sense to me is that the NHL is guaranteeing Alex Meruelo a new team in the near future.

I guess, as of today, I am no longer a Golden Knights fan.

This feels surreal. I agree that it's crazy how fast it happened.

I’ve heard the intention is to gut and expand the Delta center. Zero idea how that works as it’d take more than an offseason. If Delta is the plan you need to start at Maverik. I’d just build a new arena with some of the funny money.

Based on the chatter it seems not a single Arizonan wants Meruelo to touch a pro sports team again.

LOL, Well said!
I always thought that the NHL would come to Salt Lake before the MLB, I just didn't expect it to happen for another two or three years.

That's probably why it isn't happening. They can't play at Maverik. Well they can but it would be a massive downgrade in seating capacity, especially for the Jazz.

The Maverik Center seats 12,500 for basketball. That's roughly 6,000 less than the Delta Center. That means they'd lose out on potentially 238,000 fans a season. If it takes three years to rebuild the Delta Center, like it did Key Arena in Seattle, that's over 714,000 tickets that won't be sold. That doesn't even get into the very limited amount of luxury boxes there.

I just don't see that being a viable option.

During this legislative session the State Legislature and Governor basically created a funding package for a new facility. They’re just gonna build a new facility lol.

Smith has long shared his desire to bring the NHL to northern Utah and have the team temporarily play at the Delta Center before moving to a new arena that would house both the Jazz and hockey team. The Utah State Legislature passed a bill earlier this month that was signed by Gov. Spencer Cox that would help fund the new arena.

I don't understand. Didn't Gail Miller just put $300M into updating Delta Center?

What's wrong with the current arena?

It’s okay to not understand. Those updates helped it do the most as one of the oldest arenas in the NBA (third oldest in 2020).

It's absolutely atrocious for hockey. Sightlines are terrible. It's great for basketball, but is not a long term solution for dual use

Different owner, so what Gail Miller did with it before has no relevance to Ryan Smith.

And the Delta Center isn't good for hockey so a new venue is needed. And no owner is going to maintain 2 arenas, so unfortunately the Delta Center's days are now numbered. It's sad, but as mentioned above it's also one of the oldest venues in the NBA. Because of dual-use needs, unfortunately, whatever replaces the Delta Center will not be as good for basketball, so I will miss it as venue for the Jazz.
