So many people tried to secure their "memberships" this morning that Austin FC's website crashed as soon as it opened for reservations.

Maybe they ought to build a bigger stadium?!?

Then they wouldn't have any leverage in a few years to shake down city governments when they want a shiny new toy.

"Build us a new stadium or we'll leave for a city that will!" -- 99% of professional sports teams

It's all just a big Field of Schemes (informative website of the same name is out there too. Interesting reads)

Why would they want to leave the fastest growing city in America? One they were desperate to get into. And one where they literally would have just built a $250M privately funded stadium.

If they were just interested in going somewhere willing to pay for a stadium, there would have been a lot of other options.

I'm guessing you haven't been following this process.

It was a forward-looking sarcastic comment on the general state of sports stadiums. 10-15 years from now PSV will demand a massive subsidy to either renovate, or relocate to a newer/bigger/fancier stadium here or elsewhere. Every team does this in negotiations.

And yes, I've followed this from both sides. Precourt tried to shake down Columbus before coming here.

They have a binding 20 year lease so we will cross that bridge in 2041.

He didn't "try to shake down Columbus"

He tried to hold Columbus to the commitment they reneged on in the _90s_ to provide a stadium. Which was the only reason Columbus got a team then in the first place. And why Columbus was stuck in a broken down, almost temporary structure.

10 years from now Austin (metro) will be at 3 million people and probably in the top 25 largest.

20 years from now, when as noted they could move without penalty (other than abandoning their huge private investment of course) Austin will be almost 4 million. Probably top 20 or better.

MLS will be at least 30 teams well before then. There's unlikely to be any cities without existing teams that wouldn't be a _huge_ step down.

Looks like Austin FC set an MLS record for most season ticket deposits in a single day!

According to the Statesman, that record was 30K deposits on day one. The old record was 26K by Atlanta.

It’s not 30k deposits. It’s 30k tickets. Most people indicated they wanted multiple tickets on their deposit. There will be more than a few that back out for various reasons. Still, a great indication of support.

That's still...only in one day. The deposit segment, I believe, will remain active until August.

I really think they need to look at opening the stadium at 22,500-25,000 instead of 20,500. And they may after seeing the outpouring of support. Heck, ATL averaged over 53,000 per game in 2018 (48,000 in 2017).

The thought crossed my mind to put in a deposit. But I decided not to because I don't see how much season tickets will actually cost. I'm sure a ticket on game day will be easy to find.

The site plan was posted to the AULCC page today. Unfortunately, I don't see any elevations included. I was really hoping to see some.

You can get elevations from the rezone request. They have heights of all the signage on the building.

The first few years (basing this off other cities launching first pro sport franchises - i.e. I lived in Columbus), ticketing will be essentially sold out via big ticketing agencies (ticketcity, etc.). Demand will be high for the first few years meaning you are likely to pay above market rates via ticket agencies making margin and fees. After that demand could drop and tickets become easy to find or accessible directly from the franchise.

FWIW I wound up putting down a deposit but had the same concern / questions as you. To give me some certainty I looked at published season ticket / single game ticket costs for all of the active MLS teams. Prices certainly vary by market but it gave me a reasonable expectation of cost range.

Does anyone have a link to that?
