I think mcminsen's pic is closer to what the eye sees than most cameras. I hate when I take a photo with my phone and it looks 20 miles away with no details, e.g.

Downtown looks great IRL from my place on 3rd street but I don't even try to take pics 'cause it appears too far away.

The Edmonton LRT cars really don't look like they're supposed to form a train.

The UofA controls much of that land and wants it for academics (er I mean Medicine and Engineering). There has been a lot of infill, lots of new student townhouse/low-rise housing and new buildings south of there. You can see the new Peter Lougheed Leadership Centre 4 storey front middle.

As for more towers behind, the community of Garneau is perhaps the most challenging to develop in.
