Incredible. Eager to see more renderings, especially from the eastside!

Is anyone else going to the event at OMSI tomorrow? Might be nice to put some faces to screen names.

Yes, it's at capacity unfortunately.

Are those balconies or access decks striating the 'sails'? I like them: they'll distinguish these buildings from the hermetic glass envelopes of all the other nearby office towers, emphasizing the public and gregarious nature of this place -- much as the buildings' curvature and orientation seem to draw you in from the waterfront, into the market but also into the city itself, which they nicely frame. Tantalizing! This is beginning to look like exactly the right project for this piece of land, one that will brighten a rather dreary neighborhood in the heart of the city and perhaps help redefine downtown itself. Pining to see the full set of drawings!

Well, let me be the one to disappoint you - there wasn't a whole lot more to see. Craig Dykers of Snøhetta talked a bit about the concepts, and participated in a conversation with Randy Gragg, but overall the event was light on specifics.

Dykers is an excellent talker and made the conceptual part very interesting. Still, I was disappointed in the lack of specifics when it came to addressing the bypasses and how the market would interweave with other downtown uses. I understood the financing part was not his concern but it hung over the proceedings like a dark cloud. This all seems very theoretical still. I'm a believer but I'm not holding my breath either absent some commitment from outside a room of ardent foodies. If there's going to be a market, it will take more than crowdfunding and civic idealism. A real-estate deal of some kind, to my way of thinking, will have to provide the leverage. Right now, those 20 floor apartment towers are either wishful thinking or plain old bullshit.

So those three renderings/site plan we already saw were all that they presented? There were no other drawings?

I'm not absolutely sure there wasn't another sketch or rendering presented, but you've already seen the money shots.

The Portland Business Journal has one additional image I haven't seen before...

First look: The James Beard Public Market (Renderings)

Jon Bell
Portland Business Journal
Quote:
Rooftop terraces with views of the Willamette River and Mount Hood. An outdoor marketplace and pedestrian thoroughfare. A demonstration kitchen and a hydroponic garden.

All of these features, and then some, have been incorporated into the early design of the James Beard Public Market, the year-round, indoor-outdoor market planned for the west end of the Morrison Bridge. Architecture firm Snøhetta, which has partnered with Mayer/Reed, SERA Architects, Studio Jeffreys and Interface Engineering on the project, outlined the design in a release this afternoon.

According to the firm, the new market will "rise up in a wing-like from to either side of the (Morrison) bridge, acting as a gateway to downtown Portland." There will be large doors that will open up along the entire facade of the market, which will allow for outdoor seating when the Oregon sun comes out.

Market stalls will be arranged along a pathway that connects the main entrances to the outdoor market and a pedestrian street.
Also from the release: "Soaring ceilings clad in natural wood are supported by exposed structural steel columns and trusses, reminiscent of the neighboring bridges. A generous pedestrian street will run north and south, swelling at the sunniest portion of the site, to create an outdoor room for vendor stalls, seating, and green areas for Pacific Northwest native plantings."

They are probably holding back the actual schematic drawings and design development, showing these for marketing purposes and to drum up support.

Hard to criticize a project when all you see are sexy renderings...
