Yup. I walked past it on my way home from work. It was super busy.

There was also a "block party" protest outside which was demanding more seniors housing. The architecture looks to be a lot better than some of the schlock which as been getting put up in Chinatown recently.

I'm pretty happy with it overall, but I think the city should be massively upzoned and that view cones are moronic. The protesters seemed to want smaller buildings without a market housing proportion. I can't help but think that would just lead to this lot being fallow for a longer period of time.

Chinatown after all has given that block very little love in the past, I'm not sure why they're so worried about it now. After all, across the street is a very underutilized and frankly hideous parking lot.

I was able to attend towards the end of the evening. I must have missed the "block party" crowd though.

There were quite a few details on the boards and it looks like there has been considerable effort to break up the massing of the building. It think this project has the potential to be one of the higher quality buildings in the neighbourhood... maybe that's what the protesters don't like.

The information board that I found most interesting was the one describing the site history... basically it was developed as a single story garage in the 1930's and was demolished and converted to a parking lot in the 2000's. There has basically never been anything of great significance on this site but it seems to have become a magnet for protests because of what else has been developed nearby.

Thanks for the update.

So refreshing to see a proper urban building being built in Vancouver, i.e., a building without balconies or an idiotic setback at top. It even has a ground floor with an actual high ceiling and a cornice too.

I like the offset on the alley side. That would have been good on the street side.

The architect definitely made it too busy. At least it was reasonably priced.

Oh haha, now i see it further up the page. One of the more generic new developments in Chinatown. The orange definitely feels oddly placed, like they're trying to play up some architectural variance that's not actually there.

Oh wow, I totally thought that I was looking at 3 different buildings. /s

Is the "fake facades" approach one of the most idiotic design features ever mandated by city hall?

Not much change to see in the past three and a half weeks. A little more glass.
