Oh, this sounds like the can of worms we open regularly at my house whenever geography's discussed. My wife is from Central America and vigorously resists this idea that North America stretches all the way down to the Panama/Colombia border. I counter with, "So, are you saying that Central America forms a separate continent? Is Mexico part of that? What about Belize? What about las Antillas?" It's all about politics. We usually settle on the compromise of "Las Americas" or The Americas, without divisions.

Anyway, I'm watching them frame the fourth floor of the podium from my office window (angle's bad and glare's a factor -- makes for bad quality photos). I assume the ceiling heights will decrease significantly once they get above the podium, otherwise this is going to be one tall mutha.

866 feet / 264 meters.

But don't feel too good, the developer is asking the city to build an additional 3 floors, so this one could go to 275 meters or 900 feet.

Let's concentrate on the height, instead of geography...

An increase in the number of floors should resolve the question of weather or not Aura is the tallest. Also, I should point out that SSP has the roof height listed as 243 metres, so Auras *spire* is 21 metres high, and about 15 or 20 metres thick! There is some sort of discrepency that also needs to be resolved...

Look at the Empire State Building in NYC. Its roof height is 381 metres, or 1250 feet. That figure has been known for decades, but calling the top of the Zeppelin mooring mast a ROOF seems absurd. The whole thing is a spire, a very thick spire actually. Aura seems to fall somewhere inbetween these 2 extremes. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples of towers whose 'roof' height is actually the spire height, or the reverse, where the 'spire' height is actually the roof height.

I dunno, I think that's one of the few times when a spire-like extension of a building can actually be considered the roof of the building. There's an occupiable floor in that structure(not sure, but I think there's more than one). Where as most spires, or spire like extensions have nothing of the sort.

I can't believe the top portions of Aura are considered a spire, they look like you could build an apartment in there.

I thought they were going to be occupied floors. I am confused. Can someone post a diagram of what will be what?

I don't really think it's a spire at all, I think whoever put the details on the diagram database put the roof height as the roof height of the highest occupied floor, and then listed the extra 21 metres as the spire height, when clearly that's the mechanical portion of the tower, and the real roof height is actually 264 metres.

Oh and the building is great too!

Can't wait till its clad in glass which will give it an airy and light appearance. Then everyone who's getting all worried about this thing being to massive will calm down. Of course the temporary construction barriers don't help either.

After years (decades) of having surface parking at that corner, it's great finally to have a building there. Even at only 4 storeys, it's got enough presence to transform that intersection so completely as to make it feel unfamiliar... in a good, urban way. It doesn't seem so forlorn now. Can't wait to see what happens when they clad it.

awesome!!! You can clearly see in this pic that they're starting to remove the "supports?" from the double decker 2nd floor, revealing the full height!

The scaffolding and other equipment makes it look like the building is alread 7-8 storeys tall, when in fact each level of the podium is double the height. It will be interesting to see what happens when the tower portion starts going up...

From that last vantage points, you may not be able to see the tower floors until they are 2-3 floors above the podium.

That podium is fckn huge!

It's only 4 storeys up at it's highest point now!

Still 71 more floors to go / 74 more floors if the city gives them the extra 3
