^^ You don't seem to like him much!

Would you change your mind if they signed him for a million bucks for next season.

Yes. But only if we didn't have to hear about what he was having for breakfast in Sweden while he decided for 8 months.

I do have the problems with the import players that they will go back to their countries with the huge amount of money they made in Canada or US after their retirement. Its like 'F...You & Good Bye'...

Gaborik to Rangers... not Vancouver.

Guess all that talk about him buying a house in West Van was just B.S. So many people supposedly have homes there... its a joke. lol.

Quote:
Former Minnesota Wild winger Marian Gaborik has agreed to a five-year contract with the New York Rangers.

The Slovakian forward will earn $7.5 million per year.

Gaborik played his entire seven-year career with the Wild, scoring 219 goals and 437 points in 502 games. Injuries limited Gaborik to just 13 goals and 23 points in 17 games this season. Gaborik set career highs in goals (42), assists (41) and points (83) in 77 games during the 2007-2008 campaign.

The 27-year-old was Minnesota's first pick (third overall) at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

Fans like you are why teams go out and do stupid things like sign Gaborik for $7.5, or pickup Gomez, who's getting paid about the same.

Looks more and more like Vancouver is going to look very much the same next year.

I was slightly hoping for a little more change.

Canucks pick up Mikael Samuelsson from Red Wings

Three-year deal for player on team's radar for 'long time'

By Jason Botchford, The ProvinceJuly 3, 2009

The Canucks sure like Mikael Samuelsson's versatility, right-hand shot, and Stanley Cup ring. Because they didn't wait long to make a hefty offer to the former Red Wing, who established himself as a 40-point player in Detroit.

Those 40 points, which Samuelsson hit in each of the past two years, got him a three-year, $7.5 million offer from the Canucks on July 1. It took Samuelsson some time, at least a day, but he finally decided that kind of scratch was enough to say goodbye to the land of long, long hockey seasons.

Samuelsson indicated he had many offers. It's been reported that the Wings were looking to keep Samuelsson for about $1.5 million a year. If true, that would make the difference in money huge. But still Samuelsson said he had to take some time choosing between Vancouver and Detroit, the two teams it came down to.

"I liked it in Detroit, I have no hard feelings for them," Samuelsson said. "But they came up too short, and too late. In my mind they made their choices when they signed guys through the year."

Hey, it's not easy leaving the best franchise in hockey. And, for the Canucks, he didn't come cheap. But they don't seem to mind, even if Samuelsson will turn 33 in December.

"We've liked Mikael for a long time," assistant GM Lorne Henning said. "We liked a lot of things he brought to the table. For sure, he was at the top of our list."

Samuelsson is a late bloomer who has a low odometer reading. Just 466 games. That makes him a good gamble for the Canucks who need his versatility, especially on the power play.

"He's certainly going to be on the top two lines," Henning said.

For now, Samuelsson is expected to be the Sedin twins' running mate on the power play. It won't be the first time.

"At the Olympics they played together and I think at the World Championships they did at one time," Henning said.

"They like playing with each other and it's a great power-play setup. It's always good when you can have a right-handed shooter with the twins and he does have a great shot."

Samuelsson can man the area around the net and be the right-hand shot head coach Alain Vigneault is always looking for to play with the twins.

He can also play the point, which he did for most of the playoffs in Detroit. This will be especially important during Sami Salo's inevitable visits to the injured list.

Improving the power play was one of the Canucks' No. 1 goals this offseason after finishing 17th in the NHL last year.

Samuelsson joked that he won't bring his Stanley Cup ring in the dressing room on the first day.

"If they ask me and they are serious about it, I will bring it in," he said.

Sundin saga II? Just as long as it's not like last year

Agent says Big Swede not expected to make up mind until end of month

By Jim Jamieson, The ProvinceJuly 3, 2009

Based on how Day 1 of free agency unfolded, it shouldn't be any surprise that Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis is talking seriously about trying to bring 38-year-old Mats Sundin back for another season.

The kind of eye-popping deals being signed over the course of the day, with the dollar figures and terms being thrown around, simply didn't fit with Gillis's salary cap management model.

With all the blue-chip forwards — both real and imagined — having been signed on Wednesday, it leaves the Canucks to look at other options. And, that's where Sundin comes in.

Some in Canucks Nation will be groaning at this prospect, but take a look at it from Gillis's perspective.

Sundin is a known quantity here, he's immensely respected in the dressing room, he's established some chemistry on the ice, and presumably he'd sign for less than the $5.36 million he received for half a season's work.

And, with the Sedins signed and playing with Alex Burrows, Sundin could slip right back in on the second unit with Ryan Kesler and Pavol Demitra and give the Canucks the same top-six forward set they had the last 30 games of the season. Keep in mind, the Canucks went 23-7-2 over the final 32 games of the regular season — a run that allowed them to catch Calgary and take the Northwest Division crown.

But another drawn-out soap opera similar to last season's Sundin Watch won't go down well with Canucks fans. Sundin dithered through a series of deadlines regarding his playing future for months before signing with Vancouver on Dec. 18.

Sundin's Calgary-based agent, J.P. Barry of CAA Sports, told The Province on Thursday from Stockholm that Sundin is currently on a fishing trip but that he expects to speak with him Friday. Barry said Sundin continues to mull over his playing future, but the agent said he doesn't expect a long process.

"I think this year he wants to make his decision by the end of July," said Barry. "He's getting married at the end of August, so he wants to have all of that out of the way."

Barry said he's already had "multiple calls" from other NHL teams regarding Sundin, but that his free agent client's good experience in Vancouver would give the Canucks a distinct advantage on a new deal.

Gillis spoke with Sundin when he was in Stockholm this week getting the Sedin twins' deal done. The Canucks don't see a few weeks' delay with Sundin's decision as a problem. They'll be looking for other opportunities anyway.

But the reality is that bringing Sundin back would be workable only under two conditions: 1) That Sundin makes up his mind asap whether he is going to continue his NHL career so he can report the first day of training camp in top shape; and 2) He agrees to sign for much less, say, in the $4 million range.

There will be those who'll suggest signing Sundin last season was a mistake. Certainly, his scoring numbers were a disappointment. He finished the regular season with nine goals and 28 points in 41 games. This included scoring just three times in the final 29 games.

More disconcerting, Sundin never really seemed to find his skating legs as he attempted to play himself into game shape.

But Sundin's play came on in the final month of the season and despite a knee injury that forced him to miss the final two games of the Canucks' first round series with St. Louis, Sundin was one of Vancouver's better players against Chicago, with four points (2-2) in the last two games and seven (2-5) in the six game series.

Yes, he's a year older, but how much better would Sundin be if he's able to start the season with everyone else and not playing perpetual catch-up?

We may be about to find out.

Did anyone hear the Dave Pratt vs Don Taylor argument over whether poker is a sport or not. If not I finally found a site with an audio clip,

http://vancitybuzz.blogspot.com/2009/07/late-night-thought-pratt-taylor-where.html

LOL I think Pratt was way off base and was being a crybaby.

At the arbitration hearing, the Canucks offered Wellwood a modest raise of $2,500 over his $997,500 salary from last year.

How much do you think Wellwood is worth?
