No, just a strict height limit that encouraged developers to pack as much floor space into short buildings as possible.

'Straight up from the sidewalk' is my favourite quality in a big city downtown. That Ottawa canyon shot wouldn't be half as good if the buildings were set back. I love love love that shadow effect: it's what made Gotham look like Gotham.

Time for a mini-canyon!

Hamilton Street in Regina

Source (Migs' Photo Blog)

And looking from the other direction:

Source again is of course Migs' Blog

Also, on the left where that Comic Readers one storey building is, is now a conustruction site for this:

so the "canyon" will be getting better.

Our canyon isn't too terrible for a city our size. I like it. Just enough urbanity to compensate for the lack of interesting things here.

Big difference between the graceful art-deco and masonary towers of NYC and the blue glass boxes of Ottawa. Big difference. Gotham yes, Ottawa no.

You have a knack for stating the obvious.

I was thinking the same thing. Some people take comparisons WAY too literally.

Here is a horribly-stitched photo looking east down one of Calgary's canyons. This is 6th ave SW. What you see in the photo is approx half the length of the canyon. Im hoping in the future, that we can improve the streets to be more pedestrian friendly and add a few bike lanes. The condos are there and now it is time to get some lively streets!

I have to disagree with you. It's no Grace Building but I find it rather (weirdly) sophisticated. Say I'm completely out of my mind but I really can't help but like it.

Yeah, I also don't know what Molson is talking about. I like the Hilton (previously Westin) Tower. - The elevator ride has got to be the 2nd or 3rd coolest in the city. And the lines of the concrete bunker are actually quite slick and elegant.

I didn't make the comparison. I responding to someone else making the comparison, in reference to my own remark, which is largely based on my many walking experiences in downtown Ottawa. Jesus Christ.

I'm talking about an ugly concrete bunker of a hotel. We need not agree. It may be the least ugly in a sea of concrete bunker fuglies, but for me, a fugly it remains.
