An article in the 3/28/1943 L.A. Times mistakes the address ("5058"): "A two-acre estate at 5058 Encino Avenue, Encino, has been sold [...] for a reported consideration of $45,000. The property, formerly the home of Don Ameche [...], is improved with a 10-room Colonial home and a guest house."

Here's Don Ameche's house at 4875 Louise Avenue, Encino, as mentioned by BRR. It's just a stone's throw from the house on Encino Avenue. You can read more about that house and see more pictures on la.curbed.com. There's a list of the house's celebrity owners at movielanddirectory.com.

The house was built in 1935, and is often referred to as the Jolson Estate after its first owner, Al Jolson. By coincidence, the premiere of The Jazz Singer was 89 years ago today.

I was in:
Army ROTC, Univ. of Illinois - 1 year
Navy - 4 years
Navy Sea Cadet Officer/Instructor - 4 years

When I was young, I had a strong desire to attend a boy's military academy. I was impressed by the military academy guys I knew in my neighborhood. They all had polished manners and bearing.
I was overawed by this and instantly recognized it.
Being in the military milieu was a type of heaven for me.

About a week ago I posted pictures of the TRW office building which was part of an AC Martin-designed campus. Here are some Julius Shulman photos of another AC Martin campus, this time in El Segundo. This is "Job 3871: Aerospace Corporation (El Segundo, Calif.), 1965". There are 13 pictures in the set - this is just a selection.

Here's a view of the courtyard looking south from the building in the picture above. Note the umbrellas near the far end of the building on the right.

This is how the campus looked from under one of those umbrellas. It also gives a better view of the central building. There are closer shots among the images I've omitted. A couple of those also show elevated walkways between the three larger buildings.

I don't know which of the buildings housed this library, but with light coming in from three sides, I'd guess it's the central one seen above.

I'll conclude the Shulman pictures with this meeting room. There are a couple of other interior pictures in the set.

Some of the campus survives - the address usually quoted is 2310 E El Segundo Boulevard, which seems to apply to the building partially visible in the top left corner of the view below. You'll notice that the taller building from the first image above, which was on the northern side of the block, is conspicuous by its absence.

The missing building was still there when the GoogleMobile drove past in 2008, but gone by 2011. The 2008 images aren't clear enough to be worth posting, but the building still appeared to be intact.

I've never heard of this place before.

"Mrs. Weiss Hungarian Csarda Restaurant"

It was supposedly located in a house somewhere along Rodeo Drive.

"The original Mama Weiss' (Mrs. Weiss Hungarian) Csarda Restaurant on Rodeo Dr., 1930."

I tried to find 'Csarda' in the city directories but found nothing and there were so many Weiss' the search wasn't feasible.

The following excerpt is from the book "Star Grazing in Hollywood"-Reminiscence of a Beverly Hills Restaurateur, by Milton Weiss (2001),
who was the son of Mama Weiss.

"In mid 1930 an old wood frame house across the street from our little restaurant [in their home] became available."

but this is confusing because I don't know what he's referring to when he says "our little restaurant".

It looks like the current owner of Don Ameche's house has removed this attractive "science project" from the front yard.

That was almost as bad as the pagoda-on-a-pedestal the Korean guy has out in front of his place.

Which brings to mind a restaurant that was probably one or two streets away, at 410 S. San Vicente known as The House of [BoB] Murphy. It appears to have been extant in various iterations for approximately twenty years. There was another Murphy's in the valley (see below).

Here is a glimpse taken from a 1958 episode of Queen for a Day. Murphy was one of the show's sponsors/advertisers. The episode references many other NLA points of interest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jy9rbMGSPl4 It appears from permits that the House of Murphy occupied the 410 location as early as 1938. Other permits for that "general" locale reveal an interesting history. It looks like some of the first structures were literal transplants from other areas. One 1927 permit for "418 So. San Vicente" was for moving a structure originally located at 664 So. Catalina. Another permit indicates a garage was moved to 410 S. San Vicente from 808 East Valley Boulevard, San Gabriel. A 1945 Occupancy Certificate states House of Murphy could seat 260 people - which means a lot of corned beef and cabbage (a Murphy specialty according to the video.)

The slide was reversed on eBay...so I flipped it. -hence the backward letters

If it's correct...the young man in the 1950s slide is in front of the Edgewater, not the Breakers.
