Anyway, I hope there is no fire where there's smoke on this Senior Bowl possibly looking elsewhere stuff. That'd really suck. Can't lose that. The PR for the area for that event alone is too huge to lose.

Yeah he was refering to the Sean guy from New Orleans who started the trhread not you buddy.

Muskavon...you're a good poster. We are all talking about the guy from New Orleans who has a crawdad up his butt over Mobile. He picked a flaming thread title and ran with it. It's a good thing we don't care to bash New Orleans...there is no lack of ammunition there. I am greatful that we now have a pretty good cajun restaurant in the "French Market" at the Loop.

well thanks guys, I apologize for being too sensitive. It isn't "all about me" after all, lol. Considering we have a pretty good group of regulars here, mostly from Mobile, I have been thinking about putting together a thread that would hopefully be "sticky" worthy for the Gulf Coast. It'd basically start with a front page a lot like Atlanta's construction page in the "City Compilations" section here. But since we don't have the skyscraper potential of such, it'd basically be an info page. It'd list all the cities and townships of the Gulf counties from Hancock County in west Mississippi to Gulf County in Florida (and a few interconnected counties to the north such as Escambia & Washington, AL). Basically it'd be a spreadsheet that kept track of the latest population numbers, gdp figures, cost of living data, traffic data, maps, etc. that'd stay updated. And allow for highway project info, and such that affect the greater area but rarely make it into a particular city thread. Maybe it'd be a good way for us all to keep thinking as one unit in a competitive world. And maybe even a one stop shop for info to people considering investing in the area. I've already got a lot of the leg work done as a personal hobby, but I need a bit more time to gather the data to make the right initial post.

What do you guys think of Tampa trying to take the Senior Bowl personaly I think becasue it`s a recesion people (cities) will try anything to make money even the cities you think that aren`t hurting are struggling right now ? I don`t believe Ladd is too small for the Senor Bowl it does need upgrades and I always wanted the city to add a second level to Ladd and I think they should not becasue of this Senior Bowl thing but becausee it can draw in more money ,I think. The differnce between the two stadiums are like 20 K I believe ladd sits 45 k and the one in Tamapa sits 65 K from what I read it`s a difference but not as much as they are making it out to be the staduim in Tamapa is just a Ladd with a second level or Legion Field before it was down sized. I beleiev Mobile is going to stick this one out if we can give Seattle hell over the tanker we can surely fight this one !

Ill vouch for French Market as well. The owners are transplant from NO after Katrina. I had a roast beef poboy and it was amazing. Really messy with all the gravy. Best I have ever had. They get their bread from NO because they could not get any bread here that was up to their standards. My wife and I went back aq few weekends ago and had the beighnets and coffee with chicory. Nice way to spend a Saturday morning sipping coffee and eating beighnets outside. They have a big lunch counter and a well stocked bar too.

Great idea Muskavon. I agree that we sometimes focus too much on the city and not the region when we are talking economic development. I run across information from ALDOT sometime that doesn't exactly belong in a city thread but in a regional thread. I'm ready to follow your lead.

Ok i`ll check this place out tomorrow and i`ve tasted that New Orleans famous bread at a restaurant called Orleans on Schillinger. The bread wasn`t all what the owner tried to say it is unless it wasn`t authentic i`ll see.

Hey everyone it's been awhile

Just wanted to talk about the Senior Bowl moving to Tampa
we can't afford to lose something as major as the Senior Bowl
I think the old idiots DT need to think of whats best for the City
and not try but succeed in keeping the Senior Bowl
they put a rediculous amount of money into the Classic, a game that has very
little impact on our economy,

clean up not only the stadium but the house's surrounding the stadium
make it look more appealing and not an eye sore
the place is just to damn trashy
plant some trees and flowers something

tear the stadium down and rebuild
or atleast give it a real makeover not just paint

the City puts so much money in things we dont need or want
but neglect to put money in the things we the people of Mobile
need and want

they give us peanuts at the price of prime rib

we need fresh people in office
i like Sam Jones , i just hope he opens his eyes a little wider and sees that we need more things to do, a Joe Cain, Mardi Gras themed amusement park would be great,Joe Cain's Mardi Gras Adventures, now thats a park i would back

these people come here and stay for the practices and the game and what do we have for them to do
well they can go to the museum which is very lacking
they can eat at many places
they can take a tour(that most dont even know that exist)
theres just not much to do, just eat watch practice and go to bed
we need something, something big
i believe if we had the right entertainment in mobile
that people would come a day or 2 early for the cruise ship
just to get to know Mobile

we are very behind everyone else

i hate to copy other cities but maybe our city council and mayor needs to travel and take a look at other successful cities, to learn a few things and get a few ideas

we are a great city, just no one knows it but us

I know the place you are talking about and they can't hold a candle to the French Market Cafe. Try the cajun gumbo too....it's the real deal.

Mobi !!! It`s good to hear from you to dude "Joe Cain's Mardi Gras Adventures" I would support it as well and it doesn`t have to be huge just a Mobile Fair Ground size park or a little bit smaller. There is room downtown for it !!

Good news Gulf Coastians ,lol !!

No realy ,I was reading the PR yester day and Mobile and Baldwin Counties made the states top 10 list for fastest growing Counties.

Baldwin 3rd ,Mobile 7th and Mobile county comes in second out of the 4 most populous counties behind Madison County in growth. The growth gap between Mobile and Baldwin is closing in now. I hope for the 2010 census Baldwin and Washington County,Al , Jacskon , Greene, and George County Mississippi can all be inclduded in the CSA and MSA as well. The 3 Mississippi counties should be included it only makes sense becasue they make up a bulk of the commuting population out west.

Bob Higgans said that since the housing market is under and people arent able to sale there houses as fast . Some people wasn`t able to move/relocate job wise to our area at all ,if the housing market wasn`t what it is today the growth in both Mobile and Baldwin counties would have both been larger.

Here's the one stop shop for the latest Census stuff released yesterday (estimates to July 2008).....

http://www.census.gov/popest/estimates.html

includes latest counties, MSA stuff, CSA stuff. No change to local MSA's (territory-wise) in the greater area that I can see. Everything but my county growing around here.

It's been awhile since I've posted, but I have been reading all of the posts and enjoying all of the development updates. I found a rendering of the new CVS being built on the corner of Old Shell Road and McGregor Ave that I wanted to share.

This is the first building being constructed according to the new Village of Springhill guidelines. It looks like CVS and the Mitchell Company really cooperated with the Village of Springhill, and are in the process of building a really nice building that will be a great addition to the area.

Additionally, as noted in the article, CVS is providing the space for a plaza with a clock; the City is about to commence construction on new sidewalks for the area; the Village is about to install pavers, lighting, and benches; and other existing businesses are doing their part to transform their landscapes to conform to the Village of Springhill guidelines. This area will look very different -- and much improved in my opinion -- in a few years.

thanks for posting that sandebr00, that was actually going to be my exact next question for Mobilians (sub-GulfCoastians, lol). I wondered whatever happened to that proposed development area, but figure the obvious answer would be "it's the economy stupid". The last I had heard was a meeting where it didn't seem like the main commercial people were willing to get with the plan. Glad to see CVS wants to at least try. Hopefully the clock is a little more prominent than the rendering shows it.

National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico Set to Break Ground

Here's some good news from the city's website...

WHO: National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico
WHAT: Groundbreaking / “Keel Laying” Ceremony
WHEN: 10 a.m., Thursday, April 9, 2009
WHERE: Michael C. Dow Mobile Landing (between Cooper Riverside Park and the Alabama Cruise Terminal in Mobile, Ala.)
CONTACT: Stephanie Bradford, (251) 436-8901, [email protected]

The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico, in partnership with the City of Mobile, will hold a public groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 9 at Mobile Landing, the city’s downtown riverfront development and the museum’s future site.

City, state and federal officials, museum trustees, campaign donors, civic leaders and numerous Gulf Coast citizens will gather to witness a ceremonial “keel laying” for the Maritime Museum facility. The news media and general public are invited to attend the ceremonies.

Scheduled to speak are Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, Mobile City Council President Reggie Copeland and E.B. Peebles III, chairman of the Maritime Museum Board of Trustees. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the United States Navy Band New Orleans.

Slated to open in late 2010, the Maritime Museum will become the centerpiece of Michael C. Dow Mobile Landing, which is already home to the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center, Alabama’s only cruise ship terminal, and Cooper Riverside Park.

In addition to restoring public access to the downtown waterfront, the Maritime Museum will be only the third maritime museum in the U.S. to feature hands-on, interactive exhibits instead of a collection of maritime artifacts and memorabilia.

For more information, please contact the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico, with temporary offices at the International Trade Center (250 N. Water Street, Suite 131) in Mobile, at (251) 436-8901 or visit www.nationalmaritime.us.
