Eventually all new construction is either going to be black buildings designed by 546 or white buildings from the slow expansion of the Art Gallery/UWCommons cluster lol

Used to have 3 floors, not sure if they still do.

Wow, stunning shots! I'm glad we are seeing more drone footage of the city!

Also, you can get a better idea of the Richardson Plaza reno's in the Portage and Main shots.

Anyone know what is happening with the old Shriner's Hospital (I think that's what it was?) site on Wellington Crescent?

As of summer 2019 it was being used for the WPS to do their urban tactical training (or whatever they call it) - but otherwise empty.

It is also in great shape - no issues structurally - as of summer 2019 - although it needs some serious riverbank stabilization.

Have we heard any news on the so called mega project by Canad Inns for The Somerset Bldg / Radisson ?Last I read it was possibly up to $150 million?I recall Ledehowski was not happy about Somerset being given a historical designation albeit it only for the exterior on 2 facing sides.

Does that mean the City owns it? I hope they don't destroy the place...

I think the Province (or Health Authority) owns it.

It's a pretty robust place. They would only damage finishes. And those would get redone if it ever gets repurposed.

However I suspect that property is too valuable (to be used for large houses) to remain underused for long.

I did some background work for CBC's Burden of Truth there, the exterior of the building was being used as a courthouse. I think it was for season 1.

The riverbank erosion is pretty egregious. The entire back lawn fell into the river over the past couple decades.

Pretty sure the "old Shriners hospital" was home to the Rehabilitation Centre for Children from the 80s (and likely earlier) through until recently. The Rehab Centre moved to the former Christies Biscuits building on Notre Dame with a number of other arms length agencies that provide supportive services for children under the SSCY (Specialized Services for Children and Youth) banner.

The reason to co-locating these services was a study had been done and found that families often needed to access services from multiple agencies in different locations, at different times, etc. By having all the services on a single campus presented opportunities to better service the needs of the community and presented opportunities to work across disciplines and traditional organizational boundaries.

As for the Shriners hospital building - back in the 80s it seemed more empty than used and was looking really dated even then. Similar to the old Manitoba Clinic before it closed but a slightly different period, maybe a touch older? Sorry memory is very fuzzy of the place. It definitely felt like the use in the 80s wasn't the original use though and had actually been placed into an existing building designed for a different purpose with minimal renovations done. Perhaps at one time it was a home for children/youth with physical disabilities that were deemed to need to be separated from their families/community before society moved towards being more inclusive.

I know for sure that children lived there late 50s to early 60s, and likely well into the 70s. More recently, late 90s, I acquired a wheelchair from there for a juvenile family member.
