Doesn't seem like that many.
There are numerous towns in Ontario with populations of 5000 that have a single grocery store struggling to get enough product turnover to make it worth while; and that's with a very low lease rate. Fairly wealthy towns like Kincardine (population 12k) has 2.
I would hazard a guess that food spending per capita in the Bloor/Yonge area is well above (triple? maybe even more) the Ontario median.
In Manhattan, Chicago, San Francisco it's actually kinda hard to find a full sized grocery store. In NY you can find a half dozen delis with a buffet table and a few basics within a stones throw but full sized grocery stores are relatively rare. A 2km walk in those cities isn't unusual within the dense wealthy residential area to find something larger than a convenience store. 7 full sized stores (plus a few mini's) within 1.5km span like that is pretty unusual.
