The route through Eagle Mountain will be a long one, even with the Mtn View corridor, and the route through Tooele will also be lengthy due to having to go through the city itself.

I personally like the idea of placing it closer to I-80 on either side of the Stansbury Mountains.
Agreed. Just off of I-80, north of Grantville. Tooele County could easily support the prison and give them a boom.

How many more years of the 1997 Hale Center Theater Bond does West Valley City have to pay off?

Here is the e-mail I just received from Hale.

Dear Patrons,

We want you to be among the first to know that Hale Centre Theatre's Executive Board
and Sandy City have agreed on a location for a new facility on an 11.5-acre site at
9950 Monroe Street, between, and adjacent to I-15 and the Sandy City offices.

Our future home will include three separate stages comprising approximately 1,800 seats
combined. The new Centre stage theatre will be slightly larger than our existing facility with
one additional row and improved legroom.

Terms of the agreement are awaiting approval from HCT's Board of Trustees and
the Sandy City Council. Once this is finalized in the coming weeks, we will be announcing
more details.

This decision has not been easy. Our board has worked meticulously over the past two years
to determine the best way to expand. This is necessary to meet growing demand as we have
been at 99% capacity for nearly a decade. After significant research and analysis, the board
has determined that moving to Sandy will best help HCT accomplish its mission.

We are grateful to West Valley City, which has been a terrific partner for the past 16 years.
We look forward to continuing to produce world-class, family theatre in West Valley City for the next several
years while we work to design and construct our future home.

While expansion will offer tremendous opportunities, our commitment to providing the same
intimate experience and affordable family theatre will never change. We are grateful for your
continued support and look forward to sharing more details about the new facility in the near future.

Sincerely,

Rob Brough
Chairman, Board of Trustees
Hale Centre Theatre

From somebody who now lives in West Valley I was hoping Hale would stay put and I do agree that what Hale did to turn their backs on a city who helped them get to where they are at today is indeed a big F-U. But why are we blaming Sandy as well?
So after all these years it looks like Sandy City will finally have A theater for that area. I just hope whatever their plans are to please Sandy City try to make that area a bit more urban. Still think having a street car going down 10000 south from the Trax station by Jordan high down to the new Frontrunner station will do wonders for that area. I just hope they develop this theater right.

After looking at Sandy's downtown plans from the PDF FutureMayor posted, they seem to have some very solid plans in mind for an urban downtown. The real question is if they'll enforce that. I'm very skeptical. The Hale Theater design regarding street orientation, parking, etc. should be a good gauge into how serious the city is about their plans.

I don't see why everyone is down on HTC for their decision to move. They had a lease with WVC, they have fulfilled their lease, and simply couldn't figure out a way to make a lease extension work for them. It's the same as any other lease deal, both entities fulfilled their side of the lease and one side has simply decided not to renew, WVC knew this was a possibility at the outset of the deal.

With any lease, the building can be re-purposed for another use, or can attract a new tenant with a similar use. If the building was designed correctly, considering it was a lease tenant, it should have the ability to simply become an empty box, with multiple new use options.

And I was unaware that Antelope Island was visible from Rush Valley... especially the eastern side, with Farmington Bay in the foreground.

In fact, it seems most of the pictures were not taken in Rush Valley at all, but are depicting other corners of the state. I would like to see pics of Rush Valley, however, if anyone would care to post them.

Check out the posted link. It should help you to figure it out. Here's the link again...
http://www.rushvalley.net/ Even though I am not completely familiar with Tooele County or Rush Valley, I am
not surprised that there's a lot of beautiful scenery in and around The Oquirrhs, Stansbury and Onaqui Mountains.
Rush Valley is not a tiny area, and the scenery can range from high desert valley to large islands of alpine splendor.
In many ways, it is basically a very similar setup to the Wasatch Front before it became populated. No doubt there are
large areas, which could become even more productive agriculturally and even lush with large orchards, if given the
right irrigation opportunities and population base.

Note, don't confuse the small town of Rush Valley with the actual and very large valley of the same name. I think I
would like to explore the Onaqui Mountains

RushValley.net is a spam site with photos from all over Utah. It even has a photo of Cove Fort which is clear down by the junction with I-70 in Millard county.

This is what Rush Valley looks like: http://ut.water.usgs.gov/projects/rush/

Ha.. I noticed the Cove Fort pic. There is no way there is that large of a forested area (in the pic i asked about earlier) in the west desert...

This photo I took was in Rush Valley at the turn off onto the Pony Express Trail that takes you out to the Dugway Geode Beds quite a distance west of this. On the map above, this photo is taken right at the junction of the road that is just north of Vernon heading west.

Then this is west of of Rush Valley from the road out near the geode beds looking east towards Rush Valley.

Utah prison relocation bill takes step forward

Corrections » The proposal gets committee approval and will proceed to the Senate floor.

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/politic...enate.html.csp

By Brooke Adams | The Salt Lake Tribune

The full Senate will now debate a proposal to set up an authority to seek bids to move the Utah State Prison after a committee gave the bill a green light Wednesday, though there was discomfort with its funding scenario and how much power the governor will have to shape its executive board.

Sen. Scott Jenkins, R-Plain City, presented the Senate Judiciary Committee with a second revision of SB72, which he said clarified the structure of the Prison Land Management Authority’s 11-member board — the "hottest point right now."

The proposal allows Gov. Gary Herbert to appoint eight of the 11 members, who will be split into two subcommittees. The members will be drawn from the Department of Corrections, the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, two construction experts, two real estate experts, the Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, and one at-large representative. The Senate president and speaker of the House will each appoint a member, as will Draper City...

I agree with the discomfort. Allowing Governor Herbert to appoint that many of the members seems like a bit to much power. I think the Gov could to easily influence who makes money of the redevelopment of that land.

Stein Eriksen invests $5M in new meeting space

Luxury lodge grows space for meetings and conventions

Gina Barker, The Park Record

http://www.parkrecord.com/ci_2260073...-meeting-space

In one of the largest expansion at the luxury-resort in more than three years, the Stein Eriksen Lodge is constructing a brand new ballroom, a multi-million dollar construction opening in the spring. As hard hats bustle near the main entrance, a crane carefully placing beams, the process is already well underway.

The project is the first meeting-space expansion since the 2002 Winter Olympics, the resort is doubling what was previously available, enclosing a larger portion of the space for guests...

Architectural rendering of the completed ballroom, set to open in May 2013. (Rendering provided by the Stein Eriksen Lodge)

Fyi, Portland has a 17? story prison in the heart of their downtown. The building fits in really well too. In fact, I had been in that area many times, before I realized that it was a prison. They have an open air gym/basketball court on the 10th level.
So, I'm not necessarily recommending they build a highrise prison downtown SLC. I just thought it was interesting.

Chicago has one too, right across the street from the Sears/Willis Tower.

You don't need to build a prison out on the Salt Flats. You also don't need to move the prison to satisfy developers who have the Legislature in their pocket, although I think we're all pretty sure that's where this is headed.
