Look at all those parking lots. Many North American cities slaughtered their downtowns by demolishing blocks and blocks of housing, fine grained retail fronts, and main streets for parking and highways. Only a very rare few resisted the temptation and are the better for it today.
Indeed and thankfully many of those are now filled, but Edmonton lost a ton of character buildings. The economy was SO bad in the early 80s that it was better to demolish and pay taxes on a vacant lot than to do the same on an assessed building.

Can't see the Northstar Inn yet - started in 68 (Radisson) and the Richardson Bldg seems to just be finishing construction (opened in 69).

^Oh wow - I actually just got back from a big St. John's friend trip and recognized that instantly. Bannerman Brewing is right there just out of view on the right, which became kind of a staging base for us as we stayed nearby on Forest Rd. Definitely has some different vibes now!
I would have messaged SHH if the trip wasn't so hectic with friend stuff (big 40th birthday group trip), but rest assured I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I can definitely get why people are so attached to the place now. We had some delicious fancy meals but my favourite places were probably the Ship and Duke of Duckworth, both of which I could see myself hanging out at on a Saturday afternoon having a pint at the bar.
