It's not so much that the space program has fallen as it is that the unique confluence of events and factors that sustained those heady days of the 60's no longer exists. No more Cold War. The Nazi scientists are all dead, etc.

These renderings are so much better - more glass and modern detailing and less pastiche. Very nicely done.

New options for Beltline routes revealed

As the critical T-SPLOST referendum nears, Atlanta Beltline officials have unveiled some new options for the transit component of the $20 Billion project that could increase the regional as well as the economic impact of the project.
Among the new options are running a east-west trolley up North Avenue between the $180 million + Ponce City Market project past Georgia Tech and Coca Cola with a possible stop near the proposed $ billion Falcons Stadium.

^^^I like. Unfortunately tens of millions of dollars have been funneled away from the Beltline to things like GRTA busses and road construction projects in counties that are potential roadblocks to voting this thing in.

So I guess that's going to destroy the Masquerade? That's kind of a shame...

I've always preferred going via 10th street, mainly because that will connect West Midtown into the whole equation. If we go down North, I'm not sure if West Midtown will ever get transit--it's hard to picture another route on 10th street, and the actual Beltline doesn't really go near the core 10th St/Howell Mill area.

I was thinking that the Masquerade was being saved. There has to be some historic preservation at work there. At the heart of the complex is a civil-war era excelsior mill. (Thus the name of the popular restaurant that used to be there "Excelsior Mill").

Plus as far as just cool urban chic goes, it's hard to beat that old building for lending a little intown cred to whatever goes up there.

So I guess they would reroute it to the south of the Masquerade? That seems like it could work and would be a good option.

I love this idea I think it will be wonderful for north ave and ponce. I think it will help make that area feel more urban and hopefully spur better developments in that area. Since north ave and ponce in some spots look like suburban highways

Just an update on some Buckhead Atlanta figures and dates:

Timeline
Next few weeks - permits pulled, coordinating with original Ben Carter plan and Baupost
Q1 2012 - Cranes start moving again (I don't think they'll need all those cranes now)
Q1 2014 - Open for business

Components
370 apartments
300,000 SF retail, anchored by Hermes and retailers catering to a broad range of incomes
90,000 SF boutique office space
2,200 parking spaces
$300 million additional investment (on top of $400 million already plunked down)

Tidbits
Landscaping plan is being laid out by the lead behind Chicago's Miracle Mile improvements and will include the planting of mature trees rather than young trees, plants that reflect the individual nearby tenants, pavers, and benches. Apparently unlike other master planned-developments in town, the team behind this one is doing what they can within budget to avoid a master-planned, "plasticky" look.

Post looking at Downtown Projects

Atlanta based Post Properties is considering some downtown Atlanta parcels for future development, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. David Stockert, Post's CEO, is quoted as having an interest in developing some apartments on some parcels Post owns as part of the Allen Plaza project adjacent to Centennial Olympic Park. Stockert indicated that nothing is final and that it would be between 12 and 18 months before any project would begin.

The section of the ABC article I found interesting is:

Quote:
Atlanta is projected by year’s end to rank among the top five U.S. cities in apartment development activity, according to real estate research firm Reis Inc.

One reason is the expectation that the influx of people to intown Atlanta will continue, and the pace of new apartment construction since the downturn has slowed to a trickle.

A crane is now on site at the 10th and Williams St hotel construction site in Midtown. I think it might be a drilling rig to start putting in the footers.
