Not sure. Looks like it was marketed as retail for lease since at least 2014.

I don't know what the zoning is, but it's probably going to be build to suit retail or a mixed use building. Let's hope it's the latter

There's a pending permit for a 35 unit building on that site. Most of the reviews were denied in January so who knows when it'll come through. MCZ Development owns it - bought it on 11/4/2016 for $2.25M

They came in on a barge. It's easy to pull off when you have as deep of pockets as Apple! I recall a couple years ago in NYC when one of the maintenance people at the flagship store shattered one pane while snowblowing. Reported cost of the damage of that one pane and labor to replace it: $200k.

To keep the West Loop 'Hot,' Buildings Are Bound to Get Taller: Alderman

"If you look at most of the existing buildings that were here before development, they were all factory buildings. I think you can understand that we're not just going to have old factory buildings converted to residential. There's going to be some development, some height," the veteran alderman said. "I've got to think about it."

Small news, but an industrial site on the north branch of the river is up for sale that already has approval for 18 SFH. It's next to Lathrop homes a little south of Wellington (right south of Oakdale Ave). Houses will run an average of 3500 sq ft.

^ Those NIMBYs are idiots. There is too much parking already. It needs to be denser.

NIMBYs need to be marginalized

The Neighborhood Opportunity Fund is one of the Rahm administration's better ideas, I must say. They must already have collected tens of millions of dollars. I really hope these funds are put to good use

I'm all for more density, but until we see how the Mayor actually dispenses the funds I don't think we can attempt to judge the NOF on merit.

^^^ Does 1050 W. Wilson stay? The greek temple looking building.

And after that building, someone needs to do the entire triangle block south of Wilson. Nothing there worth keeping. That should be a landmark quality building at least 12 stories.

^ I would like to see it go towards mixed use development near transit as well as rebuilding commercial storefronts, new grocery construction, etc.

There will inevitably be some suburban-style developments but at this point we need to do anything we can to make these areas livable again and to attract newcomers.

Crains now reporting that Sterling Bay bought a parcel of land on the river too just north of the Home Depot on North Ave.

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/reale...ear-finkl-site

Quote:
The developer has yet to unveil its plans for that property—or receive the city's approval—but Managing Principal Andy Gloor said last year that the firm is considering a mix of commercial, residential and retail space there.

Gloor declined to discuss the firm's latest acquisition, a property off North Throop Street that has about 450 feet of river frontage. The site is sandwiched by the Home Depot to the south and a big maintenance facility for city vehicles.

Interestingly, the city just hired brokerage Cushman & Wakefield to sell the 18-acre maintenance property. Sterling Bay would be an obvious buyer of that parcel as well, allowing it to combine the two sites for one big development.

We pretty much figured SB would be the obvious choice to buy the big 2FM site.

Speaking of semi-dilapidated mega sites along the river in Lakeview, one of the older strip malls there has lost 2 key tenants: The local Strack & Van Til just entered liquidation, having been increasingly surrounded over its 10-year tenure with Target and Mariano's and others (like Fresh Thyme I guess), and the Starbucks just decamped for a freshly built drive-thru outlot structure across the street. The pathetic appliance store next to Micro Center also closed several years ago, so maybe it's time the strip center's owner figured out a better use for the whole parcel. The surface parking area itself is overkill too. Looking forward to some kind of giant surprise here in the coming years.
