Hopefully they don't spread themselves too thin and weaken their brand.

Simons is a well managed company so I'm fairly confident that its expansion well go well. Here are renders of two new stores:

Ottawa store, opening august 2016

Vancouver store, opening october 2014

Yeah, the Rideau Centre is downtown. Nordstrom is going to be opening there shortly, and Simons is going to be in the extension. There will also be a direct connection to the Confederation Line once it is complete.

It's on the same street as Parliament Hill (though the name changes). A five-minute walk from Parliament.

Suitsupply to Open 2nd Canadian Location in Montreal

Quote:
Popular Dutch men's suit retailer Suitsupply will open its second Canadian store in Montreal in the summer of 2015. Its location will puts it among some of Canada's top retailers, as Montreal's will see a substantial increase in upscale menswear offerings between now and 2017.
Quote:
Harry Rosen's 22,000 square foot Les Cours Mount-Royal flagship will be overhauled and expanded by the end of 2015, and will measure about 33,000 square feet when completed. One of Canada's most prestigious menswear stores, L'Uomo, is located across Peel Street from Harry Rosen. And Saks Fifth Avenue is expected to open at least one Montreal location in 2017, with a definitive announcement expected within the next few months.

All stores were well managed at one time. But once you get really large, you tend to lose all the qualities that made the store such a success.

Simons may still be o.k. But if they keep up with massive expansion, and can be found in every mall across the country. Then you can bet their style and service are going to decline. Once you hit a certain size, you just can't expect, for example, that the CEO will email you personally when you send an email about your experience in the store (which is what currently happens).

It is not just Simons. I think Canada is a little too smug lately, and thinks that we can have endless retail expansion, including in the high end category. However, I think we are going to see that we are having way too much expansion, and that it is going to cut into the profits. The reason Canadian stores and malls have done so well, is because we have not overbuilt retail. But I think we are on our way to overbuilding.

Target's future in Canada

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/01...n_6417828.html

I don't think Target is going to pull out of Canada entirely (yet), but I would not be surprised to see certain stores close or get sold to Walmart.

I had to go to the Staples today and when I looked over at Target I noticed that, as usual, there were very few cars in the parking lot. I think they could close in Kitchener and nobody would notice!

The one in Kingston has gone from being completely deserted six months ago to having a handful of customers now. Still far from the volumes Walmart has. They must have one wicked amount of cash tied up in stale inventory.

I don't mind Target at all, it's just not in a convenient location for me so I don't go very often. If I lived in the west end of Kingston, I'd probably go there a lot more.

That would create so much empty retail space, and some of it in locations that finding a new anchor may be, at best, a challenge...

You're concerned that we might find ourselves without enough retail?

Same. Though Target is in a more convenient location than Walmart for most in this city.

More like it would be unfortunate if we had large vacant spaces that could sit empty for years before they were redeveloped.

For example, Target just opened a new multilevel City Target on St. James Street in Winnipeg. I honestly don't know who would take it in its existing form if Target went belly up (maybe Simons?)... that means it could sit empty for the next few years until something happened. Not a great outcome.

One difference I notice between malls in Canada and the US: often, in the US, large malls have 3, 4 or even more department store anchors*, while in Canada, even the largest rarely have more than 2. Losing one or two anchors in Canada really hurts especially with the "middle" of the retail spectrum hollowing out.

*One caveat: it is likely at least a few in the US will get bought out or go bankrupt in the next few years as well.

^ The deaths of Eatons and various junior department stores (Woolco, Zellers) has really taken a toll on anchors. I know some malls in Winnipeg have fewer anchors than they used to... several have lost one anchor over the past 20 years.

But then, I wonder how anchor-dependent the malls really are these days... The Bay is still reasonably healthy, but Sears seems like it's on life support. It used to be that the specialty stores in malls were there to take advantage of the crowds heading to department stores...now it seems like the specialty stores ARE the main draw at malls.

is target doing worse in ontario?

i go frequently to the target in grande prairie alberta and its much busier than the zellers that was there before ever was and there are always people shopping with full carts etc. I don't shop for food there but they always have full shelves, they do tend to run out of sale items fast but thats kinda the point isn't it?

and same goes for BC, i went to coquitlam, metrotown and richmond stores over christmas and all 3 stores were busy, i was really surprised by how busy the richmond store was. They had plenty of stock and the tills were all busy, they even opened an extra one due to the line getting so long.

if they do shut down in canada that is a lot of space to fill, there are a few big box stores to take em i guess but what are the ones that can take that space? winnerS? marshalls? homesenese? a few new US ones could try like DSW, nordstrom rack if they do end up opening here, off saks 5th avenue if they also open here. but there really isn't that many big store chains left is therE?

A few more stores:

80,000 square foot store in the Ottawa suburb of Gatineau, Québec (Promenades de Gatineau) was announced after the Rideau store, but will open before in August 2015.

113,000 square foot Mississauga Square store to open in August 2016.

92,000 square foot Calgary store to open in the Lancaster Building (part of the Core Shopping Centre), to open in March 2017.

Both the Vancouver and Ottawa stores will be 100,000 square feet.
