Oh lord...

While convenient parking, important loading zones and ease of access are important, if you believe for a second that your business is being impacted by a bike land you need to really look in the mirror and find a new broker.

Bike lanes don't cause businesses to close, full stop. On the contrary, it's been proven that bike lanes increase business sales:

Pretty much anywhere you can be within a 1/2-1 block... just like any other city and closer than parking at WEM or Southgate and walking from that lot, into the mall and 600m to your store.

But I'm not the expert here...

I'm willing to bet that by the end of 2023 all that's remaining will be the Elevate Food Fare

I'm sure there must be a reason why malls don't do this, but If I owned ECC, I would have offered SportCheck and Winners a 5 year lease for a $1 at this point.

Typically once all your anchors fold, it's pretty much game over. Honestly not sure how ECC is surviving financially at this point.

Perhaps some of those leases were historical... from the Oxford days and tied to other deals at other properties.

In fact they were.

I would say most of Edmontonians and city council has given up on downtown.
And private sector.

Never ending LRT construction, crime, vagrancy, litter, poor ingress/egress to downtown, …
Leading to growth opportunities for SEC, Southgate, WEM, and Kingsway
Downtown is not a priority for city council, and hasn’t been for years. And it shows.

Wasn't there a survey done and one of the main reasons people don't visit downtown is parking costs? And then a month later, the city raised parking costs downtown?

^Yes, really unsure on what the future of downtown will look like. I guess at least the arena ended up there so that there is something left downtown? I wonder how long the ice district can hold on to what it has retail wise as time goes on.

I think it's fair to say ECC is done for. I don't see anyway it can come back from this. All this just as we were about to turn 102avenue into wonderful pedestrian shopping experience

One step forward with grants/incentives/committees and an equal step backwards by way of marginal revenue improvements (only IF used) from meters, extended hours to really push the dinner crowd away and going after the god-loving crowd by implementing charges on Sundays.

For shame.

Agreed that many of The Bay stores are pretty shabby, it's sad. I hope they don't go under, they are developing 2 new stores in Vancouver (at the new Oakridge and the Pacific Centre redevelopment). They are announced to showcase the new store direction, much smaller and more organized. I really want to see those, hope they hang on a bit longer.

Hudson Bay’s four primary Canadian markets are Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary. If any major store upgrades will be done, it will likely be in these four cities.
