I agree that for them to leave West Valley after all that WV has invested in them is a big middle finger towards them.
While I would like to see more development in the city hall area of Sandy I was hoping Hale would stay in West Valley.

For you Jazz or Jerry Sloan fans, I had a chance to walk though Jerry Sloan's home the other day. The Sloans just sold their Herriman home and the new owners didn't like the carpet had laid out about a year earlier. So I got to help myself to some free carpet that covered over 5,000 sf of his home.

Anyways to make a long story short I did a little video tour though out the house of where Jerry Sloan lived since marring his 2nd wife. ( Not sure how many years that's been )

Enjoy.
Master Bedroom

Basement
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z78ipr5udOw

Living Room
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghkA8NRfHWQ

The home sold for around $650,000 at a total of 6,000 sf. ( 6 bedrooms, 4 baths, three levels, 6 car garage. )

I do have to say that from a former NBA coach his home was smaller then I first thought. But I guess the reason why he sold it was due to neighbor kids knocking on their door asking for autographs.

Jerry Sloan's pea-green walls and sky blue carpet was really awful. What were they thinking? No wonder they're tearing the carpet out first thing.

If I'm not mistaken, the blue is the pad. The carpet was already removed.

John Martin, thanks for those photos. Olympus is my alma mater. While I'm sad to see the old building go, I've seen photos of the interior and it is stunning. I wish I could have spent three years of my secondary education in such a building. I just wish those ghastly overhead powerlines could have been buried, but that's obviously exorbitantly expensive.

I've heard through the grapevine that the open house for Olympus will take place during spring break, right before students move into the new school.

I hate the power lines too. You'd think with a budget like they had they would've gotten them out of the way.

I'm not sure about the open house. I've heard from my brother at Olympus (not a source I trust) that they were moving over spring break, but I've seen it posted on signs and online that it will open in fall.

I think your brother's right. Virtually everyone I've talked to has given spring break as the date the school will move. I think those signs you mention were posted at the very beginning of the construction project. The mild winter of 2011-2012 really sped up construction, hence the earlier opening date.

Correct. I work for Granite School District, they're doing a sort of "soft opening" starting Spring Break and going through fall 2013; there are still some facilities they'll be using in the old building, but most of the new building is up and running and ready for students. I'm not sure yet when the open house dates are, but there will be one.

I hope that they open up the old Olympus High building as well during the open house so people can go back and say goodbye to the old building. My parents both went to Olympus, I went to Olympus and now I have nieces and nephews that have gone there, so that school has been a major part of our lives.
It would be nice to be able to walk through one last time, maybe even with my kids to show them where I went to High School.

So I drove by this a while ago, and I was stunned by the size of this development. It's huge! There's like 20 buildings, each one as piss ugly as the last! What a shame.

Couldn't tell if unfinished or just really shoddy.. there seemed to be people living in these units anyway.

at least this was funny

The newly developed Canyon Slope Square is one of several projects that have finally come to fruition in Holladay.

I wasn't sure if this had been posted somewhere already. I couldn't seem to find it anywhere. I had no idea that the immediate area around E-Bay was going to have so much development going on.

Draper - Master area plan approved for area around Draper FrontRunner station

"The plan calls for over 1.8 million square feet of office space and 216,000 square feet of retail space. Approximately 20 percent of the project will be devoted to residential use, and more than 1,900 residential units are expected to be built. According to Haws, there will also be at least 21.8 acres of open space."

By Holly Corbett - The Draper Journal

http://www.draperjournal.com

Developers received a nod of approval from the Draper City Council on Jan. 8 for their plans for 145 acres of land within Vista Station. The development is located adjacent to the Draper FrontRunner station at approximately 13000 South FrontRunner Way and encompasses the area around eBay and Edwards Lifesciences.

“I think it’s very impressive,” said Councilmember Jeff Stenquist before the city council approved the plan submitted by Draper Holdings, LLC. Stenquist added that the developer has done a great job in fulfilling the city council’s vision for that area.

“We feel strongly that the environments, the space, the overall ambiance of the project will be of high quality,” said Greg Haws of Draper Holdings.

The plan calls for over 1.8 million square feet of office space and 216,000 square feet of retail space. Approximately 20 percent of the project will be devoted to residential use, and more than 1,900 residential units are expected to be built. According to Haws, there will also be at least 21.8 acres of open space.

The plan utilizes high quality building materials, such as natural stone, steel, glass, brick and concrete. It also outlines such things as rooflines, landscaping, orientation to the street, signage, active pedestrian space and drainage and utilities.

“We’re proud of the walkability of this,” said Haws, adding that developers tried to put commercial buildings within a quarter mile of the rail station.

“It’s been well thought out,” said resident Shawn Benjamin, adding that the plan gives room for future growth. However, he voiced concerns about the height of some of the buildings, which are expected to reach up to 15 stories, and about the use of stand-alone parking structures in the development.

Benjamin suggested that parking that is combined with retail space, such as that found at Trolley Square, might make for a better pedestrian experience.

The development is expected to cost $843 million. Over a 20-year period beginning in 2014, it is expected to generate $46 million in revenues for the city while increasing its expenditures by almost $38 million, leaving the city with net revenues of approximately $8.4 million over that time

This new Senior Center looks like a pretty cool design.

Draper - Draper's new senior center opens

By Holly Corbett

Draper’s seniors have a new place to call their own. Salt Lake County’s newest senior center, located at 1148 East Pioneer Road, features more than 20,000 square feet of space for seniors to socialize, dine, play games, exercise, volunteer and take classes.

“We can offer a lot more opportunities than we could offer at the other center,” said Cyndi McCarty, center manager. “Research is showing that social engagement is as important as body and mind and that it keeps [seniors] happier and healthier longer and living at home longer.”

Among the upgraded offerings at the new Draper Senior Center are billiards, nature groups, book clubs, and classes in computers, dance, ceramics, and pottery. Favorite activities from the old center, such as Wii bowling, bingo, exercise classes, cooking classes, games, and puzzles, will still be available.

“Everybody’s loving it. They’re amazed and astounded. Everybody’s surprised at it -- that it’s a senior center. It’s not a typical senior center,” said McCarty, adding that seniors have noted how much there is to do, how modern the building design is and “how pretty it is.”

Some of the amenities include a fireplace and touchscreens to check-in, order lunch or sign up for classes. There is also a modern dining area called The Gathering Place Cafe. While the cafe will still host a lunch that is available for a suggested $2.50 donation, it will also offer ala carte items that are prepared by an in-house chef for an additional fee.

“There are tons of new seniors coming in every day, checking it out,” said McCarty.

The seniors who have come in are “like kids in a candy store,” she added.

The new center will host longer hours, allowing seniors to gather from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. It is currently the only county-operated senior center that is open on Saturday.

“We want mature adults of all ages from all over the south-end of the valley to come down and experience this brand new community resource,” said Sarah Brenna, Salt Lake County’s Aging Services director, in a press release. “This is the perfect place to meet your friends, learn about community resources that keep us healthy, sign up to explore a new hobby and have an inexpensive, nutritious meal.”
If you like this, share it!

Draper’s new high school close to completion

By Cimaron Neugebauer | The Salt Lake Tribune - Dec. 5th

"From its massive stone archways to a 1,200-seat auditorium and a lecture hall, the style and size of the building impressed some in attendance on Wednesday.

The facility boasts a 3,300-seat gymnasium large enough to meet NCAA standards. There is also is a state-of-the art track, an artificial turf football field, eight tennis courts as well as a baseball and softball complex."

[B]Draper• If the new Corner Canyon High School looks like a small college from the outside, that is because it will be preparing students’ minds for higher education on the inside.

The Canyons School District on Wednesday made history by capping a dome on Draper’s first high school at 12943 S. 700 East. It is the first public high school built by the district since the Jordan School District split into two in 2007.

Using a crane, workers carefully placed the 13-ton dome — built in Tremonton — on top of the rotunda.

The building is nearing completion after construction began 20 months ago. As a 4A school, it will house 1,600 students from grades 9-12 in the fall of 2013.

Canyons School District Superintendent David Doty told a crowd who came to see the "dome drop" that the school was designed to look like a college because its top priority will be preparing children for higher education, in part by encouraging students to take college-level courses in high school.

"We wanted to send a visual signal with how important that is," Doty said.

Sandy City officials discuss sale of South Towne Center

By Brenda Fisher - http://www.sandyjournal.com/pages/fu...-Towne-Center/

South Towne Center will soon be under new ownership. Owner Macerich has put the mall up for sale, along with 15 other properties it owns across the country, said Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan.

Although it’s unlikely the mall will be closed, developing a relationship with the new owner is a big priority for Sandy City, Sandy City Economic Development Director Nick Duerksen said.

The mall is a large part of Sandy City’s long-term Civic Center Master Plan project.

“We are interested to see how the sale of the mall will impact our master plan project,” Duerksen said. “This is a huge part of the project. Macerich has been given all the information about the project, but we don’t know what it will share with potential investors interested in purchasing South Towne.”

City officials are very interested in the sale process, but will have little to do with the sale or potential buyers. Duerksen said he hopes Sandy Citywill have the ability to know who the investors are so they can potentially provide them with information about the Civic Center Master Plan project.

Macerich Public Relations Officer Kimberly Hastings would not comment on the sale or about Sandy’s involvement in the process.

But Dolan said there are 15 other malls that will be part of this package, including malls in New York, Kentucky and California.

It will be business as usual at South Towne Center while the sale process goes on, according to Duerksen.

Duerksen said South Towne has had consistent sales numbers, especially over the last several years. He doesn’t anticipate the new owners will close the mall, but hopes instead they will make renovations to it and other improvements.

“South Townehas a great track record and solid sales,” he said. “This mall will be a very attractive part of the package for the right investor.”

Sandy City became aware of Macerich’s plans to sell the mall in December. Dolan informed the city council on Jan. 8 that he had been informed that Macerich already has several buyers that have already expressed interest in the package.

“Whoever owns the mall has a lot of control over Sandy City’s future,” Dolan told the city council.

Duerksen said the future of the mall’s ownership is something city officials are watching very carefully. Macerich has been a large part of the master plan process, and Duerksen said that partnership will be missed when the sale is complete.

“We’ve always had a great relationship with Macerich in the past, and they will be missed in our community,” he said. “The unknown is always scary, but we are confident
