The north spans of the st Mary's interchange are in. They've also put in what I'm assuming is most if the gravel base for the roadway east of the interchange site based on how close to grade it is. Earthwork still moving along on the west side towards the red river bridges.

So I was just on the government of Manitoba construction map and I click the little dot at the perimeter and Mcgillivray. The construction start date says 2025 and ending in 2028. This can’t be true right? That’s insane.

That seems right on the mark. McGillivray was to start after St. Mary's. 2025 is less than 2 years away.

There’s no way the whole project ever gets done at this pace. A new government would just change the plan again…

I doubt a change in government will significantly alter the near term south Perimeter plans. Reality is citizens in the south of Winnipeg want it happen yesterday. To kill that is to burn any political opportunities in that area for a significant time period, unless there is a major unplanned expenditure like the 99 flood.

The NDP government started the Perimeter freeway project before getting kicked out of power. I would doubt they would change course if they get back in.

I work for Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure and anything under the major projects branches generally does not get cancelled or drawn up on a whim. Generally speaking, whatever the government of the day is, they like improving infrastructure, particularly under their mandate. The PTH 59 and 101 interchange was completed between two different governments and the same would happy with all of the projects under the South Perimeter Highway Projects.

For reference PTH 59 interchange history: https://www.gov.mb.ca/mit/notice/pth101_59/index.html

The project was already 8 months in when the PCs took power in May 2016. I'm not confident it would have survived the inital cost cutting days of the PC government if it hadn't been under construction. Based on that MIT page the demolition of the old directional ramp was happening right at that time and was essentially a point of no return for the project.

Like Biff mentioned, the Selinger government promised St Marys, St Annes, McGillivray, and Kenaston as a promise at the point everyone knew they were done for.

If the NDP are elected in the Fall I wouldn't expect them to change course on Mcgillivray or St Annes, and may even promise an accelerated schedule for those or other Perimeter projects.

I read on the article on the news that it is supposed to start late 2023 the earliest 2024 just as the Saint Marys interchange is wrapping up. That’s why I was confused reading that. Hopefully just a mistake on the map!

I don't think St. Mary's will be done until next year. So McGillivray starting up in 2025 makes sense. Either way, I would interpret "as they are wrapping up" to mean soon after. This is Manitoba and starting another interchange 1 year after the current project is light speed.

Edit: from the MTI website. Falls in line with McGillivray in 2025

June 2024 Interchange open to traffic
November 2024 Construction fully completed.

I would expect the NDP to carry on through and hopefully try to leverage the Feds for more funding.

I was recently going through some old home videos of my grandfathers. He lived at Summerland on Pembina and had video of the Bishop/Pembina area before the interchange and during as well. Brings back memories of being a child and that stretch being so different.

My parents bought their house new in 1978 in Waverley Heights (I bought it from them in 2016). Lots of changes.

That's about right!! The one at Southport. Before that, they had traffic lights on hydro poles on both sides.

Super cool last night, we rolled back into Winnipeg around 10 pm and were driving the south Perimeter through the new St Mary's interchange. They were hanging a new box girder for the overpass. Then as we got around east to the highway 1 interchange there was a police escort for another massive, long box girder for the project. I would assume from Lafarge's yard on Dawson Rd. It was neat because the lead cruisers were flying ahead and blocking the ramp access from Hwy 1 to the Perimeter.

I might have passed you! I was stuck behind that convoy heading west on the perimeter around 10pm, was fascinated as usual, I'm debating flying my drone over the site one of these evenings to capture the process, it appears as though they are almost done hoisting the girders though.
