What they need to realize is that the best business model is to ensure that your current franchises are doing well before continuing to expand. The Target model is a BAD one.

No question. I do think they are committed to places like Phoenix because of the TV issue. They need national coverage in the US to maximize TV revenues. That's why a new team in Toronto or even Quebec is less appealing than Seattle or Las Vegas.

I don't believe that the TV contract for Phoenix itself is any more profitable than the one for Miami-Ft Laud. What makes both places interesting for the TV contract (or so the NHL thinks) is that being in as many top 10 or top 15-20 TV markets in the U.S. allows the NHL to boast to networks and advertising that their product has reach all over the U.S.

It's about being able to claim that they are "there". Not so much about making an impact there.

So when do we get to see the proposals for LeBreton?? Do they go public immediately after the Jan 7th submission deadline ?? or is there some other timeline in effect?

If I were king of the world, I would like to see Florida move to Québec and Phoenix move to Seattle. Las Vegas would not have a whole lot of fans. The seats would be filled with nothing but tourists. NHL teams should go to markets where you can actually build a fan base, not just another novelty show.

While we are at it, the NHL awards should move from NHL city to NHL city, just like the draft and all star games.

February 2015 Shortlist of bidders revealed
August 2015 Deadline for submission of formal proposal
Fall 2015 Winner is selected

That I don't know. I would assume probably August when all the final proposals come in. However, since it's an NCC process and they only consult with the public about extremely vague projects for all Canadians, I think possibly Fall 2015 after they choose the winning proposal. I do wish that the NCC at least give us an idea of the proposed projects either in January once the initial proposals come in or February when they short list the submissions.

If the Senators can reveal their proposal, I'm sure others would be compelled to announce theirs — why would you want your competitor to monopolize public exposure and favour?. In fact, I think the NCC should just make all the bidders public the day after the deadline, on January 8. Lack of transparency will only damage this process.

But lets not kid ourselves, the NCC hates transparency more than it hates the City, so there will probably be a quiet release on a convoluted webpage in April 2016 when construction had already begun.

If they reveal too much of their proposal, they might be disqualified.

Joanne Chianello of the Ottawa Citizen was on CBC Ottawa talking about municipal issues of 2014-2015. She seems to think that the short listed proposals will be out by late March.

Proponents are not permitted to make any public
announcements, comments or media releases pertaining
to the details of their submissions either at the RFQ or the
RFP stage. Contravention of this provision is grounds for
disqualification, at the sole discretion of the NCC.

Yes, by more than a month, probably closer to over a year.

Also, as I posted in the thread on Microbreweries; maybe we turn LeBreton Flats into LeBeerton Flats!!! National Significance requirement, achieved and world class venue, achieved! Take that Beertown USA! We get a bunch of microbreweries to setup shop there with Brew Pubs, Breweries, a Museum, a Beer Themed Hotel and we could hold the Ottawa Oktoberfest there! Just think, a place you park your car for a week in an underground lot to eat and drink until you have no more money left... I mean, this would be a good addition to the arena...
