Crossrail delay: New London line will open in autumn 2019

London’s £15bn Crossrail project is to open nine months after its scheduled launch to allow more time for testing.

Europe's biggest infrastructure project will help ease London's chronic congestion by connecting major landmarks such as Heathrow Airport and the Canary Wharf business district.

The route, to be known as the Elizabeth line, had been due to open in December, but will now be launched in autumn 2019 "to ensure a safe and reliable railway", transport officials said.

It is running almost £600m over budget.

London Bridge Station



Named for its proximity to the bridge of the same name, London Bridge Station was in the 19th century the terminal station of one of the oldest passenger rail lines in the world. Unlike the large number of stations north of the River Thames, London Bridge is just one of the two big terminals of the South Bank. It receives approximately 50 million passengers per year and it was completely renovated in the same period in which The Shard was built, sharing with her a direct physical connection.

London City Airport



Of the 5 airports of the city, the London City Airport is the smallest one in size, although it reaches approximately four to five million passengers per year. It is known for its proximity to Canary Wharf and its destinations are mostly international, with the presence of companies such as Lufthansa, TAP, Swiss Air, KLM and British Airways.

Blackfriars Railway Station



Blacfriars is one of the many railway stations lying on the River Thames, in this case at the North Bank. The beginning of Blacfriars dates back to the days when the underground station was built, in 1870. It grew up until the modern station we can see nowadays, with a demolition in the middle during the second half of the 20th Century. Blackfriars is specially interesting because it connects both shores of London, with the structure acting as a station and as a bridge.

London Waterloo (Railway Station)



Currently planned to be the station with the largest number of passengers in Europe, London Waterloo is far from other railway examples of the city because it was not originally intended as a terminal, but as an intermediate stop to the City of London, on the other side of the River Thames. From 1994 to 2007, it was the starting point of the Eurostar towards Paris, which ended with the opening of St Pancras already renewed.
