^ I think the transit corridors that will be in place will be a huge advantage.
Think about it, Pheonix is the 6th largest city in the U.S. and untill December they still don't have a rapid transit system and even then it won't be very extensive. Salt Lake, however is probubly one of the smaller of the big citys and we will have light rail to every corner of the valley, a commuter rail line up and down the entire corridor as well as street cars, BRT and an excilent freeway system.
I think we're doing pritty good.

You're right. The key is to keep the inertia going. At some point people will give up on new roads, freeways, and mass transit systems. We need to approve anything and everything that hits the table now.

7 bridges 'growing' at I-80 and 1300 East

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695261861,00.html

Danny Chan La, Deseret Morning News
Seven bridge decks are being constructed at I-80 and 1300 East. They'll be "walked" from the interchange on remote-controlled self-propelled transports to their new places as overpasses along the freeway.

Utah Transit Authority will begin FrontRunner commuter rail pre-revenue testing between Salt Lake City and Ogden on Saturday, March 15. UTA is training its commuter rail operators and testing the system under the normal operating schedule prior to the initiation of public service. Commuter rail trains will run up to a top speed of 79 miles per hour. During the testing period, UTA will be required to sound train horns at each of the line's 43 at-grade crossings.

Trains will not carry passengers at this time.

It is anticipated that a quiet zone along the corridor will be established when FrontRunner opens for public service.
I've been seeing a lot more trains this week since they've starting testing on their full-schedule. Basically, they are operating a full schedule, but with empty trains until they open for actual service next month. I can't wait!

Frontlines 2015 Airport TRAX Line Public Open House

http://www.rideuta.com/mediaRoom/pressReleases.aspx?pressReleaseID=703

Utah Transit Authority is hosting a public open house to discuss the Draft Environmental Study Report prepared for the proposed Airport TRAX line of the Frontlines 2015 project. The 6-mile line will extend light rail transit service between the Salt Lake City International Airport and downtown Salt Lake City.

This Draft Environmental Study Report assesses the potential environmental impacts and mitigation measures associated with the proposed Airport TRAX line. These include issues such as impacts to vehicle traffic, open space, wetlands, noise and vibration, air quality, visual setting and urban character.

Train is out in front: Test runs preparing UTA's FrontRunner for commuters

A steady, low-level "whoosh" is the only sound you can hear as the cushy, bilevel car sways slightly. You'd think you were traveling at a leisurely, Sunday-drive pace if it weren't for the steady stream of freeway traffic that you can see being left behind.

UTA pitching TRAX to Davis County
By María Villaseñor
The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/ci_8702823?source=rss

FrontRunner might not be the only rail shuttling riders in Davis County.
TRAX could stretch into the southern cities as well.
The Utah Transit Authority is in the first stages of broadening its transit options in south Davis County. On the table: light rail and bus rapid transit.

I would love for Trax to go into Davis County. Either along Highway 89 from 3rd west or via Redwood Road from the airport extension or both

That is great news. Seriously the Wasatch Front is on it's way to having an unprecideted Mass Transit System that many larger cities could only dream off, (by larger I don't mean NY, Boston, Chicago type cities). I think I already made a similar comment but oh well.

With Front Runner initially planned to extend from Pleasant View to Payson, and ultimately from Brigham City to Nephi, combined with Traxx in SL County; main line, University Line, Airport Line, West Valley and West Jordan lines, BRT along 3500 S, and 5600 W. Add some sort of BRT or LRT in Provo/Orem along with LRT in Southern Davis. That truly is a great system. I think they need to add commuter rail to Tooele as well.

Open house to discuss airport TRAX line

http://www.sltrib.com/ci_8699977?source=rss

The Utah Transit Authority this evening will conduct an open house to discuss its planned light-rail line to Salt Lake International Airport.
The meeting is set near one of the planned stops along North Temple on the downtown-airport TRAX line, at the State of Utah's Bonneville Building, 155 N. 1000 West.
It lasts from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The topic is a draft environmental review of potential effects to such things as vehicle traffic, open space, wetlands and noise.

Thats the whole article. I wish I had the time and car to go

$2.50 base fare and up to 5.50 with a transfer? that is not so bad, I didn't realize you got a transfer with that. And it was announced recently that U students will get free (well I'm sure it will be reflected in our fees) fare on frontrunner, so that is good for all those who commute in from up north, as I did a couple years ago. I think I may have to take a ride up to O-town on front runner to see what's going on up there some saturday in the near future.

Commuter rail will be free for passenger service from April 26 until April 30. Paid service begins on May 1st. This is according to a UTA spokesman on KSL yesterday.

It is free to get people used to riding the trains and also let people see the traffic as they pass it by.
