Ducharme knows what he's doing. Park and Ride is only going to add about 1.5 transit riders per car that parks there, whereas each additional bus, even if only half full, is 20 riders. He's not saying that they're going to ditch P&R completely, but does not see the point of displacing residents for it. I think he's just going to hold out until the thing is built and for Southgate to cave in once they realize the hundreds of cars that are parking in their lots to take the LRT.

And as for the $2.2-million ETS is getting for security... it astonishes me that a 40-million ridership system is getting more than a 450-million ridership system... the TTC is only getting $1.4-million. The Conservatives claim that Toronto is getting its fair share through the investments in Union Station and GO Transit, which also carry a fraction of TTC's ridership and is getting more... Not saying ETS should get less... but TTC's security system is REALLY lax and desperately needs a lot of cash just to catch up to the same security level as what exists on ETS right now.

P&R is standard fair for stations like this in most places.....and while i agree they have gone the way of tact in that once cars begin parking all over the place southgate and residents will prob want a dedicated parkade, it SHOULD be there to begin with.

But yet you continue. Perhaps someone could allow TNP to remodel your house/apartment condo/cardboard box. I wonder what the results would be like.

Just like a meth addict, you know the shit is bad for you, but you keep coming back for more... lol

But it's got a good rhythm.

Increased bus service in the meandering street, crescents and bay subdivisions is not going to help that much since the stumbling block to people using it is ease of access (it's not going up every street) and time of ride which is not going to decrease.

I don't really agree with the destruction of residences for a parking lot. It just basically seems wrong, especially when a parking garage on the actual parking lot of Southgate makes a lot of sense. Southgate gets more after work vehicular traffic. "I'm already out of my car, I'll just stop and pick up..." Do the expansion with a grocery store and pharmacy and Southgate traffic and rents would go up. Maybe Southgate is asking too much. Maybe they should realize what they stand to lose here if in five years time if the park-and-ride gets built one stop further south.

If southgate doesnt start "cooperating" soon, perhaps we should just build a 3 story concrete wall on the east side of the LRT station, that prevents easy access from the mall to the LRT station, and vice versa. Perhaps we can also alter the access from the road to southgate as well, completely isolating it from 111 Street altogether.

I wish southgate went UG on its eastside for parking and put up 2-3 condo towers with townhouses fronting the east side and a park and ride on the NWC.

City sets up second land draw (11:50 a.m.)
Takes steps to curb rush for 75 housing sites
Susan Ruttan, edmontonjournal.com
Published: Wednesday, November 15, 2006
The city is taking steps to curb a modern-day land rush for the 75 housing sites it’s putting on the market next month.

Because of the high demand, city staff will hold two draws instead of one to select the people who get the lots. A preliminary draw on Nov. 27 will choose 200 bidders who will be eligible for the final draw, to be held Dec. 12 at the Clareview Arena.

Up for grabs are single-family lots in Brintnell in northeast Edmonton, which the city is selling for between $118,000 and $166,000 each. Only one lot will be sold to each person or company, and the city strictly forbids more than one family member or company employee putting in a bid.

Font: ****The lucky 200 who are in the final draw must each bring a cheque for $4,000 to the meeting as a qualifying deposit in case their name is drawn.

That’s one reason the city has introduced a preliminary draw, said Bill Covey, who handles real estate for the city. With Christmas so close, it didn’t seem right to require 300 or 400 bidders to show up with a $4,000 cheque, when most will go home disappointed, he said.

Edmonton’s real estate market has been very hot in the past year. A lot sale the city held last year drew more than 300 bidders for 75 lots.

Heeeeeeee's backkkkkkkk....

There are some very good projects UC or in planning in Winnipeg and i like that city, but Edmonton is not going to be passed by it...thats like the people who think Calgary will be bigger/more important than vancouver or toronto...just wont happen.

Edmonton has made huge strides in the past 2-3 yrs and look to be on the right path. We just need to dream big and stick to it...

I wouldnt be here if i didnt think so.

Plans unveiled as part of second-quarter financial update
Archie McLean, edmontonjournal.com
Published: Wednesday, November 15, 2006
The provincial government is set to spend almost $1 billion on new projects.

The cash includes $320 million for aboriginal and affordable housing, as well as improvements to community facilities, including Commonwealth Stadium and Rexall Place.

Finance Minister Shirley McClellan unveiled the plan today as she presented the government’s second quarter fiscal update.

Font: ****Little of the new cash comes from oil and gas royalty revenues, which are actually down slightly from last year. Instead, most of it comes from record high personal income tax revenues and near-record corporate tax revenues.

“Tax revenue is increasing as the economy grows,” McClellan said in a news release. “At the same time, it’s important to note that resource revenue is almost unchanged from the budget, and down $2.8 billion from last year, underscoring the importance of sustainable budgeting.”

Here’s a breakdown of the new spending:

- $77 million for new schools

- $162 million for post-secondary facilities, mainly in southern Alberta

- $30 million for pandemic preparation

- $100 million for regional water projects

- $116 million for provincial highways and resource roads

- $125 million for public transit

- $320 for aboriginal and affordable housing, and funding for community facilities, including Commonwealth stadium and Rexall Place
And honestly, Edmonton is not THAT MAJOR of a city. I think the money should have been focused in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. These are Canada's only REAL MAJOR cities of significance, and more likely to become victims of a terrorist attack. What are they going to attack in Edmonton, WEM?

^while i agree that Edmonton isnt a #1 target, well beside refineries, public security is as important here as anywhere. Sure Tor,ott, mtl, van should get more for obvious reasons, it doesnt mean cities like halifax, winn, cal, edm, vic should get far less.
